Syria Crisis: Mr Westerwelle visits THW-Team
Yesterday, the Federal Foreign Minister, Mr Guido Westerwelle, and his Jordan counterpart, Mr Nasser Judeh, visited the refugee camp al Za’atari in the Jordan-Syrian border area. Mr Westerwelle was impressed by the performance of the THW-team and assured further support. In the presence of the ministers, UNHCR and THW signed a contract about the construction of kitchen units.
“Here you can see that the German aid gets to where it is most urgently needed – to the people who do not have anything to do with the conflict”, said the Federal Foreign Minister. “I am pleased to see a German organisation like THW here.” During a tour of the camp, the ministers also met the head of UNHCR in Jordan, Mr Andrew Harper, who informed them about the work of the refugee relief organisation and other organisations. According to his information, on average, 1,000 people per day arrive at the camp. More than 50 percent of the meanwhile almost 30,000 Syrian refugees in Za’atari are children.
At the moment, the refugees are centrally provided with two warm meals per day by the World Food Programme of the United Nations (WFP). “This is a logistical effort which will not be feasible in the long term“, said Mr Harper at the subsequent signing of the contract. That is why THW is constructing 160 kitchen units for the camp. Each unit comprises two kitchens. “For the time being, one kitchen is to be used by 12 families”, explains THW’s mission head, Mr Stephan Mack. He said that such a calculation did not allow a lot of leeway. Therefore, the Foreign Office had assured financial funds for the expansion of the capacities.
