NEWS SCAN The rail connection from Rome's Fiumicino Airport to the city will be ready in December 1989. Nonstop as well as stopping services will operate when it opens. Regional Italian airline Transavio has started its seasonal services connecting Elba and Bastia in Corsica with Pisa and Florence on the mainland. An Elba-Milan service is also to start on a daily basis this summer. SAS has lost a contract with US-based Rosenbalm Aviation of the Emery group for the maintenance of its DC-8s because of the old US Federal Aviation Adminis tration (FAA) rule now being applied which requires an FAA inspector to be on hand to approve the work. Swedish air traffic controllers who have been involved in industrial action agreed with SAS and lata not to disrupt overflying traffic. New Scotland-based trans atlantic airline Highland Express is to offer a £19 one way fare on the domestic feeder leg from Stansted or Birmingham to its Prestwick hub. This is substantially cheaper than the rail fare and existing air fares. The same 747 is being used for the domestic leg and the trans atlantic flight. MARKET PLACE Afghanistan has bought two Tupolev Tu-154Ms to replace the McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30s sold in the West after Soviet pressure. Bakhtar Afghan Airlines president Muhammad Fedawi and chief pilot Salaam Nadran took delivery of the aircraft in late April. Bakhtar absorbed Ariana two years ago, and is now the sole Afghan carrier. Delta Air Lines has ordered another six Boeing 767-300s worth more than $300 million, for delivery starting in Febru ary 1988. Lufthansa has added a $130 million order for five more 737-300s for deliv ery from August this year. Qantas has ordered its first extended-range 767-300 for about $75 million, with options on six more. Air France is adding another two 737-200s to its fleet.
