2018 AIP Congress: Call for focus sessions and nominations for plenary lectures

2018 AIP Congress: Call for focus sessions and nominations for plenary lectures

As announced in the last AIP Bulletin, the Australian Institute of Physics 2018 National Congress will be held in Perth from 9-14 of December.  For more information see: www.aip2018.org.au.

The Congress Program Committee is now seeking expressions of interest from scientific associations, and other formal or informal interest groups, to propose and organise Focus Sessions at the Congress.

Focus Sessions aim to enrich the Congress by providing a range of forums, in addition to the usual sessions organised through the Topical groups and Cognate Societies.

Focus Sessions may be hot topics, an emerging research community within Australia, or simply an opportunity to gather together under a common interest. A Focus Session usually consists of one invited speaker, contributed talks and a poster session.

The concept of focus sessions is modelled on the American Physical Society March Meetings, where the scientific program is partially organised through Focus Sessions, proposed by members of the society (see: https://www.aps.org/meetings/policies/focus.cfm as a guide and https://www.aps.org/meetings/march/scientific/categories.cfm for examples of topics)

Your Focus Session proposal should include the following information:

  • Proposed Session Title
  • Lead organiser & co-organiser names and contact details
  • 200-300 word description and rationale of the session topic
  • Estimate interest in session e.g. number of groups in Australia, likely number of talks, or attendance at recent similar symposia
  • Plan to advertise session
  • Preliminary suggestion of an invited speaker

At the same time, the Congress Program Committee is seeking suggestions for high profile National and International Plenary Speakers. Plenary Speakers will be selected by the Programme Committee with particular regards to the AIP Topical Groups and Cognate Societies. However suggestions from the wider Australian and international science communities are welcome and hereby sought.

Please send your proposal for both focus sessions and for plenary speakers to the Program Committee, by email to AIPCongress2018program@gmail.com before the 30 of September 2017.  Any questions can also be directed to this address.

Feel free to circulate this announcement widely, within the Australian and international science communities.

The Programme Committee is looking forward to hearing your ideas.

Bruce Gardiner

(Secretary of the Programme Committee of the 2018 AIP Congress)
