Shawn Stockman OF 'THE SING-OFF' ON NBC

JACQUELINE CUTLER

How old were you when you knew you could sing?

It was just something I could do. I was around 5 or 6. I was singing and recording myself on my Fisher-Price tape recorder. People around me were more amazed by my voice than I was. I was just singing. At the barbershop, they would pay me $5 to sing a Michael Jackson song.

Who was behind you?

My mom. She pushed me. My first experience, organized, was with the Philadelphia Boys Choir. That's when I was around 8. I remember thinking, 'I like this singing thing.' I started to love this, too. I learned to read music and developed the love, and my mom helped me develop that love.

When did you know that you could make a living doing this?

Not until the first album, "Cooleyhighharmony," and I started seeing the reaction of how people enjoyed our (Boyz II Men) music.

Who are some of the bigger names you have performed with?

Destiny's Child, Michael Jackson, Brandy, Babyface, Mariah Carey.

With whom would you like to sing?

It would be interesting to do something with Prince. One time where we almost did and he told us he wanted to work with us. He's an eccentric.

What are you working on?

A new album, "Love." It features songs from Nat King Cole to Bonnie Raitt and Chicago. It's a serious blend of love songs from the group.
