25 Ways Apple Cider Vinegar Will Change Your Life

Did you know that something in your pantry has been used as a healing elixir since 400 B.C.?  It’s true! Have you heard about apple cider vinegar and all its uses? Raw apple cider vinegar was used by the father of modern medicine, Hippocrates, for a multitude of things. It’s been used throughout history and is just as useful today. In fact, in even more ways than you think. Below, you’ll find 25 ways to it and one way to save money when you buy it. This list will leave you reaching for a bottle of apple cider vinegar instead of a bottle full of toxins that could be harming your family and lowering their I.Q. Be sure to always choose organic apple cider vinegar to make sure it’s truly toxin free, as apples are the most contaminated fruit.

Swap out apple cider vinegar for some of your household products as a non-toxic alternative. Learn all about apple cider vinegar here - Mamavation

1. Non-Toxic Cleaner:

It’s no secret that vinegar is an excellent household cleaner. What some people don’t know about apple cider vinegar is that, in its raw unfiltered state, this vinegar contains all the bacteria-fighting benefits that many commercial vinegars lack. To make your own cleaning solution, simply mix equal parts water and ACV, plus a little elbow grease, to get your home free of dirt, bacteria, and toxins cleaners. Don’t worry, the vinegar smell goes away as it dries.

2. Weed Killer:

A friendly neighbor turned me on to vinegar as weed killing alternative years ago and it’s even more effective than dangerous glyphosate.  Just mix 1/2 gallon apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup salt, and 1/2 teaspoon dish soap. It will effectively kill any plant you spray it on, so make sure you avoid the flowers and other plants you want to keep.

3. Odor Neutralizer:

Is your home filled with an unpleasant odor that just won’t go away? How about apple cider vinegar as an odor neurtralizer? Place some ACV in a dish and leave near the offensive odor to help get rid of it quicker.

4. Diabetes Prevention:

Multiple studies have shown a correlation between apple cider vinegar and lower blood sugar levels. In one study, participants took two tablespoons of ACV before bed and saw their blood sugar drop 4 to 6 percent by the time they woke. The anti-glycemic effect of the acid in apple cider vinegar is what helps with insulin sensitivity.

5. Weight Loss:

Consuming apple cider vinegar can help you feel more full, which can help you eat less. A study has also shown acetic acid, found in ACV, slows fat accumulation. If the flavor is too strong for you to sip on its own, how about apple cider vinegar in juices, salad dressing, and even water? It’s a great way to incorporate it into your diet.

6. Lower Cholesterol:

In addition to lowered blood sugar and weight loss, a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showed interesting findings about apple cider vinegar and cholesterol.  Lowered VLDL levels and lowered triglycerides were discovered in lab rats who were given apple cider vinegar alongside a high cholesterol diet. The rats who were not given ACV did not see the same drop in cholesterol.

7. Detox:

Apple cider vinegar can help detox your home, but it can also detox your body. It can help promote circulation and detoxify the liver. The acid in ACV can also bind to toxins which can assist in removing toxins from the body. Apple cider vinegar’s potassium content helps to break up mucus in the body and clear the lymph nodes. This also aids in the removal of toxins. Learn more about apple cider in your diet and check out these other ways to detox.

8.Clear Sinuses:

Since breaking up mucus is one of the great things about apple cider vinegar, it also helps clear out the sinuses. Since it’s antibacterial, it can also prevent a sinus infection or cold as well. Sip some water and apple cider vinegar to breathe a little easier.

9. Sore Throat:

The bacteria fighting properties of apple cider vinegar work just about anywhere. Gargle equal parts warm water and apple cider vinegar at the first sign of a sore throat to keep it at bay, and repeat every hour as needed.

10. Digestive Aid:

Having tummy troubles or know you’re going to eat something that you might regret later? Sip diluted apple cider vinegar (mixed into water or juice) to help settle that stomach. It’s the antibiotic properties and bacteria-fighting power of ACV that helps. Some say the pectin in apple cider vinegar also helps with intestinal spasms.

11. Itchy or Sunburned Skin:

I know this is one of my favorite things about apple cider vinegar. It’s great for sunburned or itchy skin. Just apply right to the itchy area for some relief. It also works for itches caused by bug bites, poison ivy, or a jellyfish sting. As for sunburned skin, soak in a bath with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar to help ease the pain.

12.Wart Remover:

Over the counter wart removers are anything but natural. A trip to the doctor to remove it can be scary, painful, and leave a scar. Instead, soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and cover the wart. Leave it covered overnight (I use a bandaid or medical tape) and repeat every night until the wart falls right off.

13. Energy Boost:

Don’t reach for a chemical-filled energy drink if you’re feeling tired. Instead, grab a bottle of apple cider vinegar for an energy boost. The potassium and enzymes in apple cider vinegar help to give you a pick me up. Just add some ACV to a glass of water. I like adding it to my water during a workout to prevent fatigue. The amino acids in apple cider vinegar combat lactic acid build up that can happen after exercise.

Beauty/Hygiene

14. Shiny, Flake Free Hair:

Apple cider vinegar is an excellent weekly hair rinse. It leaves hair looking shiny and soft. The acid in ACV helps to remove product build up. It also helps to balance your scalp’s pH level. Mix 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar into 4 cups water and rinse the hair after shampooing, then rinse with cold water. If you are having issues with dandruff, try spraying your scalp with equal parts apple cider vinegar and water twice a week. Place a towel around your head and leave wrapped for up to an hour. Wash your hair as you usually would.

15. Facial Toner/Cleanser:

Thanks to the antibacterial properties of apple cider vinegar, it’s great for cleaning most everything, even your face. It can even help prevent breakouts. Just like with you scalp, it can help balance your skin’s pH levels. Dilute some apple cider vinegar with water and apply to a cotton ball to use as a toner or on blemishes.

16. Deodorant:

Many deodorants are harmful to your health. Nothing about apple cider vinegar is toxic, and it will help fight the odor-causing bacteria without the cancer-causing toxins. Just apply a little ACV under your arms. You won’t be left smelling like vinegar once it dries.

17. Fade Bruises:

Coming from a long line of klutzes, this was the best thing I learned about apple cider vinegar. After a bump or the appearance of a bruise, dab on some apple cider vinegar. It acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and will help to ease the discoloration.

18. Whiten Teeth:

Make those teeth sparkle after swishing around some apple cider vinegar diluted with two parts water. Then brush as usual. The bacteria-fighting power of ACV is an added bonus too.

19. Eliminate Bad Breath:

Use apple cider vinegar as a mouthwash, and gargle to help eliminate objectionable mouth odor. It kills the bacteria that causes bad breath.

20. Stop Smelly Feet:

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, apple cider vinegar helps get rid of bad smells, wherever they may be. If that just so happens to be on your feet, try this remedy. Wipe your toes and feet down with a paper towel soaked in ACV to combat the odor. The ability of apple cider vinegar to balance the pH of your feet and eliminate odor causing bacteria is what makes it a great natural remedy.

21. Juice:

Consuming organic raw, unfiltered ACV can assist in many of the health benefits I listed above. Try adding it to juices or smoothies if the taste is too pungent for you on its own.

22. Baking:

Fluff up your baked goods by adding apple cider vinegar. It adds lift to cookies, cakes, and other concoctions and you won’t taste it in the final product.

23. Sauces:

I use ACV for my barbecue sauce and it’s perfect for that tangy but sweet flavor. Try it in your favorite marinades or mix it into condiments that are too thick.

24. Soups:

Still need more ways to get vinegar into your diet? Try adding it to soups. It can add a bit of brightness and flavor. Don’t worry, it won’t end up tasting like vinegar.

25. Salads:

I think this one goes without saying, but it certainly needed to make the list. I almost never buy salad dressings. Whisk together some apple cider vinegar and olive oil and your favorite additions (garlic, mustard, citrus, honey, etc) for a delicious drizzle over your organic greens. It’s even great in recipes like this Fiesta Coleslaw.

My boyfriend gets really bad sunburns, and as I’ve gotten older I occasionally burn on my face as well. Is there anything special I need to do to use it as sunblock? Is it just straight from the bottle onto the skin?

ACV is not a sunblock. It can be used to aid healing of burns.

I just have to say, I have taken ACV before, but I would always eat right after so I never felt the effects. This time I decided ok, I haven’t done it in awhile and I need to because my cholesterol/triglycerides are bad, they said my lipids are abnormally high, plus I feel swollen and moody. Anyway, I figured I would give it a shot to lower my lipid count. This time I drank it however, I did not eat anything right after and let I absorb into my body. This is gonna sound crazy, but about 20 minutes after taking it I was checking my emails and i felt this tingly coldness running through my body, i stopped and started to pay attention to the feeling more. I started to notice the heaviness around my eyes go away, the cold feeling felt like its just in my toes now, my sinuses are much clearing, my brain fog is gone completely I seriously feel like the inside of my body has been scrubbed clean down to my toes! I have NEVER felt this before, I actually started to cry because I felt relieved? I didn’t even know I was stressed! I felt myself smiling and I feel like getting out and doing something like hiking, I cant believe how I feel!

I have a vaginal bacterial infection. My Gyno gave me an antibiotic (Metronidazole). I read the side effects and they are terrible. I am scared to take. Will ACV help in this area? I would so prefer a natural remedy.

    • Leah Segedie February 26, 2017 at 11:34 am - Reply

I think you should ask a health care professional about that one. But I will say that we don’t recommend antibiotics unless needed. Antibiotic resistant bacteria kills over 23,000 people per year in the US.

Okay so I don’t usually post comments or replies on things but for this I felt I had too. I have quite a few things that I suffer from such as, anxiety, depression, IBS, acid reflux, and fatigue so I was looking desperately for something natural to take, I hate taking pills or medicines. Anyway, I found this page on ACV and its benefits I thought I would try it, didn’t actually think it would help but it’s been 6 days and I’ll tell you what, it has made a difference in most of these issues. My mood and energy have been good, and getting a little better every day, my IBS has gotten better no issues with going to the bathroom as of lately, my acid reflux has gotten much better I was able to eat red sauce and tomatoes and I didn’t get heart burn, and I have lost a little weight, My husband mentioned to me last night that I was looking thinner, so I weighed myself this morning and I am losing weight! Also, my tummy is flatter from not being bloated from the IBS. All I can think is that this is helping in those areas because it is the ONLY thing I am doing different. I do 2 tsp – 1 tbls of ACV, 1 tsp raw organic honey in 8 oz of water and drink 30 min before I eat in the morning and at lunch I do make it cold I put the ACV in the fridge and use cold filtered water it doesn’t taste to bad at all and easy to drink that way.

I went to see my GP, due my sore throat pain. Then she took my blood pressure and then she said you have got high blood pressure. I was like that for 6 weeks. Then she put me on lower dose of medication in order to low the pressure. I used it for 2 weeks then l went back for check up. She checked me again and said its perfect. Then after that it took me another 3 weeks and stopped taking the medicine. She said its much better now and you controlled it well. But l did not tell her that l have been taking ACV. Because l asked her before and told her l don’t like to use medicine and l need something natural to get rid of the blood pressure. Then she said only medicine can stop it. At the present l take 1ts of ACV in a glass of water every morning in an empty stomach and l feel much better no blood pressure even l have lost about 2 kg within a short period of time. Thanks to ACV and it benefits. It’s amazing. Well done everyone!

  26. Pat February 20, 2015 at 6:03 pm - Reply

I use ACV everyday. I know this sounds gross but just before I am finished with my coffee (I have about 1/3 cup coffee) I add 2 tablespoons ACV, 1/2 lemon, TSP cinnamon, some turmeric, ginger, 2 tablespoons honey, dash clove and nutmeg (as each of these ingredients are good for you in one way or another) I reheat stir really well and drink. I know it sounds disgusting but not bad at all. All the different flavors cut the pungent taste of the ACV. I get all my “Healthy” stuff in with one small drink. Since I have been doing this my sugar has been lowered, don’t get heartburn so bad, my arthritis is much better, cholesterol is lower, lost a few pounds, I have more energy and feel better.
Don’t know if anyone else would be willing to try it but it isn’t as bad as it sounds. Good luck

The only study to test the idea in people was done in Japan. In the study, 175 obese but healthy people took either vinegar or water daily for 12 weeks. Their diets were similar. They kept food journals. At the end of the study, those who used vinegar had lost slightly more weight. On average, the vinegar group lost 1-2 pounds over the 3-month period. They gained it all back after the study was over.

Hot spots are common if you feed a low quality food found in grocery store all garbage. Dogs need real meat. Read your ingredients list it should say chicken and or chicken meal . Chicken by product is void of meat , grains should not be in dog food they are not cows.
When a dog or cat have sores(Ex hot spots ) his is not getting what he needs to be healthy

Use as clothing whitener. Just add some ACV to rinsing water especially to white clothes.
Use as vaginal wash to eliminate itching… warm some ACV, add cold water if too hot and use as wash…
Use to treat minor burns… wet a cotton and put over burned skin…
Blood will not curd if vinegar is added in it. So when clothe is stained with blood, put some and wash immediately

I had flat warts on the backs of my hands and some fingers for several years (I didn’t even know that’s what they were because they didn’t look like a typical ugly wart). After going to a dermatologist where they actually told me what they were, I tried everything they say to do to get rid of them…even bleach – a last resort (yikes…I know). I finally read online about Braggs apple cider vinegar so I decided to give it a try – with zero confidence, after trying everything else, that it would do anything. . I soaked cotton balls in the vinegar and strapped them to the back of my hands/fingers during the night (over a few nights) I was completely surprised that it is the only thing that got rid of them completely!!

My husband and I have our cocktail every morning! This is what it consists of.
    2 teaspoons honey
2 tablespoons of ACV (braggs is the brand we always use)
And 1/8 teaspoon Cheyenne pepper (90,000 hu) we buy it by the bulk.
Then add a little water to the mix and drink up!!
You will get a “good” warm feeling when you swallow but the healing attributes you feel in your throat all the way down your body is amazing. These are all anti-cancer over the counter items!! Try it and you will have an amazing energy boost and that sore throat will be gone real quick!!

Before I retired I raised and bred Pomeranians for a few years. When my
adult Poms would have any problems with their fur or tics or fleas or any
other problems, I would just shampoo and rinse them and then use a
quarter of a cup of ACV on them, then rinse them real good. They did
not mind and it took care of the fir. They all had beautiful coats.

I have had several rounds of painful bonespurs, the Dr. of course recommended surgery. My nutritionist friend said try Braggs ACV. I drink about 1/2 oz. per day and all of a sudden my spurs were gone. Every couple of years I get them again but now I know how to get rid of them.

Maybe you had a lot of toxins in your body. Releasing a lot of them at once can make you feel sick. Try going slower and drink LOTS of water to flush out the toxins.

It gets RID of warts! Soak a cotton ball with it, apply to wart, cover with a bandaid and sleep with it on. My son’s hand wart was gone after 4 nights of treatment. No icky chemicals, cheap and safe. This stuff is amazeballs.

I have been giving my horses each a 1/2 c of ACV 2x a day for 5 years. Prior to starting this routine which I originally started to keep flies off of them, they used to have all kinds of stomach, joint, skin problems. I spent literally $1000’s on vet bills.
Since I began giving it to them I can count the number of times I’ve had the vet out for problems on one hand. I AM A BELIEVER!
I have been taking a TBS in warm water with a bit of organic honey. I had the flu last week. My time sick has been shortened considerable. My husband got sick before me and is still sick. TRY IT! Thanks!

I use ACV as my facial toner and it has almost completely eliminated my acne which has been an issue for me for over 20 years. I also drink it throughout the day in my water for added health benefits.

How much do you dilute it?

Just a little note: Using the weed killer recipe above will make it so the weed will die and nothing can ever sprout up in its place. Not flowers. Nothing. For years. Be careful with that recipe.

Good to know. Perhaps we should modify when we do something on lawn care. Thanks!

this is completely false about cannot grow anything ever after applying to garden. We just did this last spring and this mixture scorched the heck out everything we put it on. Then days later left untouched new grass started growing right back. Seems it’s a quick fix useful for those that would be tilling up the ground after administration

You are right about that. We used it and it worked for about 2 weeks and then the weeds came back. It works great short term.

I have also been told that a tablespoon a day will help with people who get random hives, like my daughter.

Add a couple tablespoons to a large bowl of water for the dogs to rid fleas. It works!

I’ve been giving a 1/2 tsp. of ACV mixed in my 2 1/2 year old’s heavily diluted apple juice once a day. He’s been having a lot of mucous-y looking diapers. Not sure if it’s related to the ACV or not, although it started exactly the same time. Should I be concerned? Stop giving it to him? Lower the amount? His skin looks absolutely amazing and he seems to be in a better/calmer mood, but the mucous…yuck!

    • Randy February 6, 2015 at 4:44 am - Reply

That “mucous” is probably fat coming out of the baby’s body. I saw something similar in my stool soon after beginning a regimen of ACV mixed with water and honey before meals. Your baby’s losing unnecessary fat! Ask his/her doctor to be sure.

Mallory it could be parisites that are giving you little one thoses symptoms. I good parisites cleanser combined with a probiotics would solve the problem.

Please don’t give your child anything that hasn’t been recommended by their pediatrician! You may be endangering his/her health.

    • Yaro Teal January 23, 2018 at 9:01 pm - Reply

Mucous like stool is never normal and looks very different from fatty stools. Check with your pediatrician before trying anything new for your little one. They may even have a “safe” dilution ratio you can follow.

    Bragg cured my Acid Reflux

    • Erick February 5, 2015 at 6:55 pm - Reply

Whats your mixture? Can you give me recipe?

      • Janine February 21, 2015 at 2:04 am - Reply

1/4 cup braggs raw apple cider vinegar in a pint jar fill the jar with water. I added stevia and cinnamon. My sister failed to tell me to sip it all day so I just drank it. i 1/2 cups into it I just couldn’t drink one more drop. I called her and she laughed her head off. I did not have one drop of acid reflux for 6 months after that. Now I sip it when ever I I feel like I have too much acid. I have never gone back to how it was before I drank that. I was popping prilosec daily and still had acid reflux all the time but worse at night. I had to sleep on several pillows almost sitting up. No more. This really worked for me.

        • John January 25, 2017 at 1:44 am - Reply

To stop the acid reflect try 1 teaspoon of coconut oil. But let it slowly trickle down your throat and it will not burn any more.

    • teresa February 8, 2015 at 10:22 pm - Reply

Are you serious, I have tried going off Prilosec and I can’t, nothing helps except the medication. I will try this, how much do I need. Thanks.

    • Bri February 18, 2015 at 5:59 pm - Reply

Mine too! I was dealing with what is called “silent reflux”. Once a day a tall glass of water, 2 teaspoons Braggs Apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon raw honey. I rarely have any silent reflux now. Suffered with it for over 2 years. I hope it continues to work for me.
