Air Chief Marshal Sir Peter Le Cheminant, the former Lieutenant Governor for Guernsey, has died aged 97.

He held the office between 1980 and 1985, and was the first native Guernseyman and is though to be the only native Guernseyman ever to do so.

Before that he was a highly decorated RAF pilot who served in both the second world war and the Korean war.

Sir Peter was born in Guernsey in 1920 and went to Elizabeth College before entering the Royal Air Force.

He had a distinguished career in the RAF during which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar for his exploits.

The abilities which had taken him to the very top of the RAF and the rank of Air Chief Marshal served him well when, in 1980, he was appointed as the Lieutenant-Governor and Commander-in- Chief of Guernsey and its Dependencies.

Sir Peter is thought to have been the only native Guernseyman to have served as the Sovereign’s personal representative in the Bailiwick, other than as Bailiff.
