What is a downloadable PDF pattern, and how do I download and print it?

A downloadable PDF pattern is a pattern that is accessed from a computer through a file format called PDF. The file can then be saved on your computer or storage device, and printed from your home printer. Select patterns are available for print at a copy shop.

Most pattern types on the site are listed as “Download.” The type can be found in each respective pattern listing. In order to open them, you will need to have Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader installed into your computer. You can get a free download of Adobe Reader here.

Each “Print at Home” pattern comes in sets of standard 8 1/2 × 11 or A4 sheets of paper. Please print each sheet AS IS – do not crop or enlarge the pages. You are provided with a guide that shows you how each pattern must be assembled. For more information on printing and assembling patterns at home, please go to this page. Please note that some print options require you to select “Fit.” We recommend you find your test square and print this page first for accuracy. Your test square should measure 10cmX10cm.

If you are experiencing problems downloading or printing your pattern, the following information should help you. We do not e-mail patterns.

- In order to download any of the patterns featured on our site, you must be a registered member. Before attempting to download, please be sure you are logged in.
- Check to make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Reader. Visit http://get.adobe.com/reader/ for download information.
- Clear your internet browser’s cache and cookies.
- Check to make sure your browser’s Java-Scripts are enabled.
- Click “Save As” instead of “Open” when downloading.

Once you click “Add to Cart” on the pattern page, the pattern is automatically sent to your Purchase History page within your profile. Go to your profile by clicking on your username, and click on the Pattern Library tab.

Pattern instructions are located on each pattern’s detail page as well as in your Pattern Library.

I am having trouble accessing my pattern instructions. What do I do?

If you are referring to instructions for BurdaStyle and burda style magazine-created patterns, please note that all of these patterns provide instructions directly on their respective Pattern pages.

The following information should help you with the download and/or print problems you are experiencing.

• Check to make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Reader. You can download Adobe Reader at http://get.adobe.com/reader/.
• Click “Save As” instead of “Open” when downloading. (Right-click over the “Print at home” link and a drop-down menu will appear)
• Clear your internet browser’s cache and cookies. Restart your computer.
• Check to make sure your browser’s Java-Scripts are enabled.

If you still experience problems once you have followed all the listed instructions above, please e-mail us at Answers@BurdaStyle.com

• The browser version you have, and interface (Mac/PC) you use to visit BurdaStyle.com

I am interested in purchasing a pattern. What do I need to know?

Any purchase made on BurdaStyle.com is subject to our Terms of Sale, or the Terms of Sale of any Partner Brand featured on the site. The acceptance of these terms is a condition for any purchase.

All of our patterns come as downloadable PDF files. They are not mailed.

At this time, Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express, debit and credit cards are the only accepted forms of payment.

All of our online transactions occur over 256-bit encryption, SSL connections. A 256-bit encryption is the strongest and most difficult encryption algorithm as recognized by the Advanced Encryption Standard. It contains 14 computation rounds that one must go through in order to break it, ensuring the highest security possible for your data. SSL is an abbreviation for Secure Sockets Layer, and is the Internet standard for creating an encrypted link between a web browser and a web server. To ensure that the SSL is active, please look for green in your URL bar on the Secure Checkout page(s).

Once your purchase is finalized your pattern will be automatically transferred to you Pattern Library within your member profile.

Free Patterns: Once you click “Get It” on the pattern page, the pattern is automatically sent to your Pattern Library within your member profile. Free patterns by burda style magazine are to be self drafted using the instructions provided, not printable pattern is to be downloaded.

NOTE: The BurdaStyle team strongly encourages you to save all free and purchased patterns onto your desktop or external device. We can not guarantee your patterns be saved in the case of a site crash or other extreme technical emergency.

How do I upload a pattern?

For step-by-step instructions to turn your physical pattern into a print-at-home PDF file ready to upload to BurdaStyle, see this technique.

- Log in to your BurdaStyle account.

- In order for you to upload a pattern, you must create a new project and add instructions for your new pattern.

- Fill in the information about your project in the provided fields and click on “Continue to Instructions.” Once you are done entering the instructions for your project, you can select “Continue to add a pattern.”

- Fill out the required information, and in the Pattern PDF section select “Choose a File” to upload a “Technical Drawing”, “Print at Home Pattern PDF”, and/or “Print at Copy Shop Pattern PDF.”

- Technical Drawings images will be cropped to fit 283 × 148 pixels.

- When you are finished, select “Create new pattern.”

- The project will be saved to your studio. To share with the BurdaStyle community select “Publish Project” on the following screen or access your pattern in your “My Studio” section by clicking on the “Publish” link.

Where are my purchased patterns located?

All of our available patterns come in downloadable .pdf files. Once you click “Get It” on the pattern page, the pattern is automatically sent to your Purchase History page within your profile. Go to your profile by clicking on your username, and click on Library. You can also access your Library in the right-hand side of the homepage.

Can my patterns within my Pattern Library be deleted?

Once a pattern is within your Pattern Library it can not be manually removed, this includes duplicate patterns added.

How can I print a pattern through a copy shop?

All patterns do not have the copy shop option, including some BurdaStyle patterns. All burda style magazine patterns do not have the copy shop option.

All available copy shop patterns should be printed on 3 feet wide paper, and should be printed AS IS.

Can I sell garments made from a pattern on BurdaStyle?

It depends on the type of pattern used.

All BurdaStyle-created patterns are considered “Open Source.” An Open Source pattern means that it is copyright-free, which means that you can create garments based on the pattern for commercial use. We do, however, appreciate crediting BurdaStyle or linking back to the base pattern. You are not able to re-sell the original pattern.

Please note that only BurdaStyle-created patterns are copyright-free.

burda style magazine and member-created patterns still maintain copyright restrictions. You are not allowed to create products from these patterns for commercial use.

Can I sell the actual patterns I download from this site?

No. All patterns, including open source patterns, are not intended for re-sell. Any attempted re-selling of BurdaStyle, burda style magazine or member-created patterns that you did not create is subject to legal action.

If I purchased a pattern, can I offer it as a download on my blog or online shop?

Our patterns are not intended to be distributed, commercially or otherwise, by any other platform other than our site. Once you purchase a pattern, you are entitled to use the pattern as mentioned in our Terms of Use, but you cannot offer it as a download or make it available for others to use in any other form.

I would like a refund for my pattern purchase. Is this possible?

Refunds are only issued on a case-by-case basis for extenuating circumstances. If your pattern does not download, does not download completely, or is otherwise broken, please contact us immediately, but no later than seven (7) business days (Monday through Friday) after the failed download. Refunds for any reason but technical issues with the download of a pattern are issued at our sole discretion.

What's the difference between BurdaStyle patterns and burda style magazine patterns?

While similar in PDF format to BurdaStyle.com patterns, burda style magazine patterns do have key differences BurdaStyle.com patterns were created at the BurdaStyle New York office and published between 2007-1010. Patterns by burda style magazine are designed in Germany by a separate Burda team/business.

- Seam allowance: burda style magazine patterns do not have seam allowance included. Such is the standard for all burda style magazine’s printed patterns. You must add seam allowance yourself.

- Copyright Laws: burda style magazine patterns are not under the same open source umbrella as BurdaStyle.com patterns, and therefore are restricted in use by the copyright laws maintained under burda style magazine. You are welcome to download burda style magazine’s patterns and sew from them, but you are not allowed to use the patterns for commercial production, sell the garments sewn from these patterns, or sell or give away the patterns.

Can I find a pattern I saw in a burda style print magazine on the site?

While BurdaStyle.com sells burda style magazine patterns we do not publish all of a magazine’s content. We do not and can not publish any burda style magazine patterns from an issue prior to 2010.

If you are looking for a particular pattern, you can browse our Pattern Store or enter the issue date (without the variation number) of the pattern into the search bar. Example: 10/2012

I just purchased a pattern and the sizes are "17,18,19..." or "72, 76, 80..." What do those numbers mean?

These are petite (160 cm to 168 cm) and tall (176 cm or taller) sizes. The only thing that differentiates these sizes from the regular regular sizes is the length. Depending on your height, you may need to do minor altering when using a petite or tall pattern.

The height measurements for petite sizes are from 63 to 66 1/4 inches (160 to 167 cm).

The height measurements for tall sizes are 69 1/4 inches (176 cm) and up.
