Akane Yamaguchi Becomes First Japanese Player to Achieve World Singles No. 1!

Date
19 April 2018

BWF rankings were announced today (4/19), and Akane Yamaguchi has made history by climbing to the top of the women’s rankings, becoming the first Japanese player, man or woman, to achieve a World Singles No. 1.

Yamaguchi, who began using the ASTROX 77 from last year, used her strong smash and net play to win her first badminton Superseries Finals last year, and took home first place at the YONEX German Open and runner up at the prestigious YONEX All England Open last month.

Of her long-desired achievement, Yamaguchi joyfully proclaimed, “I’m so happy to be the World No. 1! I think using the ASTROX 77 from last year’s championships has been the biggest weapon for me. I will do my utmost to keep this ranking going forward, so please keep supporting me!”

Yonex is extremely pleased to be able to support the first Japanese player in badminton history to achieve a World Singles No. 1 ranking, and will continue to cheer for her future successes.
