Rafael Nadal: 2009 highs and lows

Rafael Nadal was tipped by Andre Agassi to win a calendar of grand slams earlier this year following victory at the Australian Open in January.

Victory over rival Roger Federer at Melbourne Park, however, was his sole major triumph of a season blighted by injury.

The Spaniard has not won a title since May and became the first player to be knocked out of the ATP World Tour Finals in London with a second successive straight sets defeat.

Here we chart Nadal's slide in 2009.

Australian Open, January
The 22 year-old captured his sixth grand slam, and his first on hard courts, with a five-set victory over rival Roger Federer to become the first Spaniard to win at Melbourne Park. Nadal had beaten compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the semi-final in a marathon contest which lasted five hours and 14 minutes.
