Jacob Gottschalk Ascher was Canadian champion in 1878-9 and (jointly) in 1882-3 periods and was the New Dominion Monthly's chess columnist. He was the secretary of the Montreal chess club at 141 Mansfield Street, the president of the Montreal Chess Divan at 112 St. Francois Xavier Street and was on the managing committee of the Canadian Chess Association in 1884.

Dec-21-04		Benzol: Jacob Gottschalk Ascher Born 18th February 1841 in Plymouth Died 12th October 1912 in New York Canadian Champion in 1878-79 and 1882-83 (jointly).

Apr-05-05		Benzol: I had assumed originally that this was Jacob Gottschalk Ascher but can anybody (<IMlday>; <ruy lopez 900>) confirm this. Help is definitely appreciated in cases like this.

BTW, Ascher drew a game with Steinitz in a 18-board simultaneous exhibition in the Columbia Chess Club on 1 January 1888; maybe the game survived. At this time Ascher was the chess editor of the Montreal "Sport".
