Jacob Gottschalk Ascher was Canadian champion in 1878-9 and (jointly) in 1882-3 periods and was the New Dominion Monthly's chess columnist. He was the secretary of the Montreal chess club at 141 Mansfield Street, the president of the Montreal Chess Divan at 112 St. Francois Xavier Street and was on the managing committee of the Canadian Chess Association in 1884.

  Benzol: I had assumed originally that this was Jacob Gottschalk Ascher but can anybody (<IMlday>; <ruy lopez 900>) confirm this. Help is definitely appreciated in cases like this.

My Jurassic machine won't let me access that article you've linked to but never mind. Btw are you uploading the games you've posted on other threads? I think <CG> are very busy with other things at the moment so game submissions are suffering.

Sep-25-15  thomastonk: A few days ago, I posted an Evans Gambit <Wallace v Bowen>, see Albert Edward Wallace. The next game is also an Evans Gambit, but it is much more difficult, but by no means less entertaining.

Maybe I will post here some comments within the next days.

BTW, Ascher drew a game with Steinitz in a 18-board simultaneous exhibition in the Columbia Chess Club on 1 January 1888; maybe the game survived. At this time Ascher was the chess editor of the Montreal "Sport".
