The Easiest Booties 0-6 months; 6-12 months

bootiesb.jpg

To fit 0-6 months; 6-12 months

Many people have trouble with the traditional method of making booties, i.e., with a flat sole that you make first and then add the top on.  I figured I needed to make up a basic pattern for an easier way, a way that most beginners will manage quite easily.  I hope you like the end result.

Difficulty:  Easy

Pattern is written in US terms; a conversion chart is included at the end.

Materials:  Approx 30g Worsted weight yarn #4 (Suggested:  Lion Brand Heartland); 4mm (G/6) crochet hook, yarn needle for sewing in ends..

Gauge:  14 sts and 16 rows hdc = 4”

Finished size:  3.75” long; 2.5” wide  (to fit 0-6 months); 4.25” long; 2.75” wide (to fit 6-12 months)

Abbreviations: sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st/s = stitch/es; beg = beginning; rep = repeat; hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 together.

Instructions: (Make 2)

0-6 months:

Row 1:  With 4mm hook, make a magic ring (alternatively, chain 3, sl st to beg chain to form a ring); ch1, work 8 hdc into the ring you just made.  Do not join. Place a marker and continue working in a spiral by starting the next row directly in the first hdc of the previous row until instructed otherwise.  (8 hdc).

Row 2: hdc in next st; 5 hdc in next st; hdc in next 3 sts; 5 hdc in next st; hdc in next 2 sts. (16)

Row 3:  hdc in next st and each stitch around. (16)

Row 4-7:  Repeat Row 3.

Before moving on to Row 8, when you are done with Row 7, and still working in the same direction, sc in next 3 sts; sl st in next st.  You will now be working in rows instead of in a spiral in order to shape the back of the bootie.

Row 8:  Ch1, hdc in same st and to end, do no join.  Turn.  (16)

Rows 9 - 13:  Repeat Row 8.  Turn.

Row 14:  Ch1, hdc in same st and in next 6; sc2tog; hdc to end. Turn (15)

Turn booties inside out and sl st to join down the back seam to the heel.  Fasten off.  Sew in ends and turn right side out again.

Rejoin yarn at the front of the bootie, in the first st to the left, with front of bootie towards you.

Cuffs:

Split Cuff:

Row 15:  Ch1, hdc in same st and in next 6 sts to the back of the bootie, hdc into each side of the back seam, then picking up the opposite side, hdc 8 sts again to bring yourself back to the front.  Turn. (17)

Rows 16 - 20:  Ch1, hdc in same st and each stitch around, working 2 hdc into the last stitch of each row.  turn.

Row 21: (Optional) Ch1, working across the front of the bootie cuff, sc in same st, across front split and to the end of the other side of the front of the cuff.  Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Rolled Cuff:

Row 15:  Ch1, hdc in same st and in next 6 sts to the back of the bootie, hdc into each side of the back seam, hdc 8 sts to bring yourself back to the front, sl st to beg hdc.  (17)

Rows 16 - 20:  Ch1, hdc in same st and each stitch around, sl st to beg hdc.

Feel free to add a row or two more here if you want the cuff to be taller.

Row 21:  Turn.  ch1, sc in same st and to end; sl st to beg sc.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

6-12 months:

Row 1:  With 4mm hook, make a magic ring (alternatively, chain 3, sl st to beg chain to form a ring); ch1, work 9 hdc into the ring you just made.  Do not join. Row 3:  hdc in next st and each stitch around. (18)

Row 4-8:  Repeat Row 3.

Before moving on to Row 9, when you are done with Row 8, and still working in the same direction, sc in next 3 sts; sl st in next st.  You will now be working in rows instead of in a spiral in order to shape the back of the bootie.

There you go - easy!

Embellish the basic booties as you like, with a tie, or a ribbon, or just a button, for a boy or for a girl.
