Old Master Paintings

Sotheby’s Old Master Paintings Department offers paintings by European artists from the late 13th to the early 19th centuries. Our global team includes 20 dedicated specialists, many with a tenure of more than 15 years. Our six most senior experts have worked as a team for over 25 years. Their expertise covers all schools in this diverse category, including Dutch, Flemish, German, French, Spanish, British and Italian Old Master paintings.

Our specialists’ unparalleled relationships with established collectors and new buyers alike have resulted in numerous world records, including the highest price for any Old Master Painting sold at auction. Our recent sales have attracted individuals from nearly 70 countries, driving prices ever higher and procuring consistently strong returns for consignors. Sotheby’s has led this market for seven of the past ten years.

In London, Sotheby's major Old Master Paintings auctions take place in July and December and include Early British Paintings 1500–1850. In New York, major auctions are held in January and June. We conduct an auction in Paris in June as well. We hold auctions of more moderately valued works in London in April and October. Consignment deadlines are typically eight weeks prior to the sale.
