Assessment Information [top]

Red List Category & Criteria: Vulnerable B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,v); D2 ver 3.1
Year Published: 2016
Date Assessed: 2016-02-09
Assessor(s): Vermeulen, J.J., Anker, K. & Rudolf, E.
Reviewer(s): Khela, S. & Seddon, M.B.
Justification:
The species is known from six localities, which are separated from each other by an area of unsuitable habitat. The species is therefore considered to be severely fragmented. Two minor localities are included in a planned conservation area, all other localities are under various kinds of threats and continuously declining. The extent of occurrence (EOO) is approximately 20 km² and the actual area occupied by the species is estimated to be less than 1 km². Due to this, the species is assessed as Critically Endangered under criterion B1.
The chances of survival of the species would increase considerably, if two more hills, Nui Ba Tai and Nui Hang Tien, would be included in the conservation area.

Geographic Range [top]

Range Description:

This species is known only from Viet Nam where it occurs in Kien Giang Province. It is known from six limestone hills: Nui Ba Tai, Hon Da Lua East, Nui Hang Tien, Nui Khoe La, Hon Lo Coc and Nui Son Tra. The surrounding limstone hills have been surveyed, but the species was not encountered.

The species area of occupancy (AOO) is 8 km² and its EOO is 16 km² (estimated with GeoCat using a 2x2 km grid cell raster). However, the actual area occupied by the species is estimated to be 1.5 km² (the sum of the ground surface of the limestone hills from where the species is recorded, measured with Google Earth Pro). Of this area 0.3 km² is lost already because of quarrying. Another 0.5 km² will be lost when Nui Khoe La is quarried to the limits of the concessions during the next decade (based on planning of concession holder HVL, and field observations within adjacent concessions by Vermeulen et al., 11/2014) and Nui Ba Tai is given in concession.

Population [top]

Population:

The species is common in soil samples, and it is assumed that it occupies the whole of the limestone hills from which it is reported. The population of the species is inferred to decrease due to the habitat loss and degradation in part of the distribution range.

Current Population Trend:Decreasing
Additional data:
Continuing decline of mature individuals:Yes
Extreme fluctuations:NoPopulation severely fragmented:No

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology:The species is endemic to limestone areas, where it lives in soil high in organic content.
Systems:Terrestrial
Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat:Yes
Movement patterns:Not a Migrant

Use and Trade [top]

Use and Trade: This species is not utilized.

Threats [top]

Major Threat(s):

The species occurs in six locations, three of which are affected by various threats.

Hon Da Lua is included in conservation area and comparatively untouched. Both islands are very small (site report with Vermeulen et al. 11/2015).

Hon Lo Coc is included in conservation area, little disturbance and no known threats.

Nui Ba Tai is not quarried at present, but at risk. It is contested by a chemicals company for quarrying, by the army for unknown purposes and by Provincial authorities for conservation (comm. Brunner, IUCN Vietnam, 3/2016).

Nui Son Tra  is not quarried at present but vegetation cover is degraded and partly removed (site report with Vermeulen et al. 11/2015).

Nui Hang Tien  is not quarried at present, but at some risk. It is contested by the army for unknown purposes and by the Provincial authorities for conservation (comm. Brunner, IUCN Vietnam, 3/2016).

Nui Khoe La  is quarried at present by three companies, the northern part within concession of HVL and quarried, the southernmost part is extant but future is uncertain, contested by the army for unknown purposes (site report with Vermeulen et al. 11/2015).

Conservation Actions [top]

Conservation Actions: No species-specific conservation measures are in place. The small island localities Hon Da Lua and Hon Lo Coc will be included in a planned conservation area. The security of the species will increase significantly if the larger hills Nui Ba Tai and Nui Hang Tien will also be included in this conservation area.
