South Sudan

In recent years, the Republic of South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, has often been in the headlines due to the protracted armed conflict which has engulfed the country since December 2013.

However, despite the challenges posed by the conflict, the landlocked eastern-central Africa country has been working with UN Environment, and other international partners, to address decades of environmental degradation.

JUBA, 13 JUNE 2018 - The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) jointly with the Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Immigration (DNPI) of South Sudan and Forcier Consulting launched today a study on statelessness in South Sudan.

An agreement implemented between farming and cattle herder communities in three neighboring states in greater Bahr El Ghazal region has brought about progress in addressing conflict arising during cattle migration season.

The rate of criminal incidents related to the movement of cattle has gone down, says William Kamilo, Chief of Rocrocdong County near Wau, but more needs to be done:

“The agreement has not yet been disseminated to communities in Kpaile, Bagari and Bessilia because of insecurity in these areas”.

Joyful songs and dancing greet the arrival of the head of the UN Mission in South Sudan to Ganyiel, located in the north of the country.

That warm hospitality, however, inadvertently masks the reality on the ground.

Some 300 metres away from the singing and dancing, 11-year-old Ruach Matjang Kuol lies writhing in pain, at a makeshift medical centre.

He looks stoic, but can hardly speak, so his mother, Rhoda Nyawika, volunteers to tell his sorrowful tale.

As countries integrate the SDGs into their domestic development priorities and plans, the value which South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSC/TrC) initiatives can potentially add to efforts intended to end poverty, achieve gender equality, and support sustained and inclusive economic growth seems to be widely underestimated.

June 12, 2018 (RABAK) - The government of the White Nile State said it would transfer 25,000 South Sudanese refugees from an overcrowded camp to a newly erected camp in July.

More than 25,000 South Sudanese refugees would be transferred from the overcrowded Khor Al-Waral camp to Al-Jami’ia camp in Al-Salam locality.

The director of the department of organizations and refugee affairs at the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) in White Nile Mustafa al-Fadil said the transfer of refugees aims to reduce overcrowding and prevent the spread of epidemics.

Comprehensive Level 3 (L3) registration launched in Ethiopia in 06 July 2017 starting from Addis Ababa. L3 registration was intensively implemented in Addis Ababa during November 2017.

• On 17 May, 210 children were released from the pro-Machar SPLA-iO and National Salvation Front (NSF) in Pibor. This represents the third release in 2018, bringing the total number of children released from armed forces/groups and supported with reintegration services in 2018 to 806.

Operational Context

The key situations include:

Twelve-year-old Emmanuel is a student at Illuhum school in Torit, a region to the east of the capital Juba, in South Sudan. Because of his disability, his mother used to carry him to school on her back, before going to work as a coal seller. A heavy burden on her, it also made life difficult for Emmanuel, who was often late for school.
