CHICAGO, Oct. 15 (AP)—Edward V. Gold. the founder of Wimpy's Grills Inc., has died of an apparent heart attack. He was stricken yesterday at one of his restaurants in downtown Chicago. He was 70 years old.

Mr. Gold established the national chain of restaurants, named after a hamburgermunching character in the Popeye comic strip and cartoons, in 1934. He established Wimpy's International, with worldwide outlets, in 1954, and later sold it to Lyone Ltd of England. He had served as director and treasurer of the Chicago and Illinois Restaurant associations.

Now there are only seven Wimpy restaurants operating, four in downtown Chicago and three in the suburbs. Mr. Gold also owned two Crane restaurants in Chicago. He established Crane Restaurants Inc. in 1963.
