The plot is surefire horror movie fodder: Two young couples decide to hide overnight in a carnival fun house, not knowing there’s another tenant—a monstrous killer. While the director, Tobe (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) Hooper, ought to have moved on to better things, he is a master of this gore-and-sadism genre. His heroine, Elizabeth Berridge, is a good bet for the 1981 Jamie Lee Curtis Award for Most Comely Innocent Victim, and Cooper Huckabee has a klutzy, Harrison Fordish-like charm as her date. The film features an excruciatingly tense final confrontation too. It would be a satisfying scare if everyone’s wits weren’t already dulled by the chiller glut. (R)
