after the painting by Dosso Dossi
Behind her not the quivering of a leaf
Flutters the deep enchantment of the wood;
No ripple at her feet disturbs the well;
She sits among her lovers dazed with grief,
Bewildered by the charge of alien blood.
Herself transfigured by the hideous spell
She sits among her creatures motionless,
Sees the last human shadow of despair
Fade from the sad, inquisitive, animal eyes,
The naked body of the sorceress
Mocked by the light, sleek shapes of feather and hair.
And as on snout and beak and muzzle dies
The melancholy trace of human speech,
For the first time her heart is rich with words
And with her voice she disenchants the grove.
The lonely island and the sounding beach
Answer with barks and howls, the scream of birds
Her uncontrollable, aching cry of love.
