1. The game is pretty proud of being anime as hell, that's for sure.

I'm not crazy about the character designs, but their personalities are pretty nice and I already feel attached to the cast.

i really really like the look of the art and the world and the animations. but the gameplay looks so off putting and complex.

Damiani figured out the combat together with chat and it's already going much better today. We're back on track.

Man, I totally get it, but when you've seen the same shonen anime trope for the 745th time, it gets pretty tiresome. It feels really generic to me so far. Kind hearted boy meets mysterious girl who bestowes him with powers and he helps her out. The power of friendship conquers all and all that.

I do enjoy the gameplay and combat, but the story is a miss for me so far.

Exactly my thoughts, after reading some reviews I thought the game itself would not grab me but I just started chapter 3 at 8 hours played and I'm having a blast.

Granted that i'm not playing it, if this is a Xeno game, then many of those tropes should soon get thrown out of the window.

  7. Excellent betting special.

Although I have to say those forfeits were a little on the wank side. Ian's was OK I suppose, but Brandon's "You must stream in a really big wig" is just so rubbish.

Well to be honest I don't read them when I know there's potential for some vile shit. A review of a JRPG by Ben, you'd think it'd be pretty safe. That's like quintessential EZA lol

Yeah, Ben seemed pretty annoyed by the comments (although he said he's become numb to it now). Reading through them, they do seem more negative (and irrational) than usual, but Ben said this is usually the case for the JRPG reviews. I thought it would be people who thought the game deserved a higher score, but for the most part, it seems like people who think 8/10 is too high and biased... even though it's below the metacritic average.

As mentioned many times here, EZA has a huge community problem. Perhaps due to the lack of clear political alignment the level of hate on the comments is genuinely the worst part of the experience. But you can always not look at them I guess, and pretend ResetEra is the official spot for discussions.

I thought the review was fair, and the game does feel like it's greater than the sum of it's parts, and while that makes it just shy of greatness, it's still absolutely worth it, especially for a portable system when you can play it in chunks and do the grinding elements on the go.

I feel like people have been giving him a lot of grief since the whole FFXV vs Persona 5 debacle. I don't remember exactly what they felt wronged for, if it was because he scored P5 higher or he was down on FFXV in his first impressions of the demos, but I think that triggered this whole aggressive thing.

When did it become like this? I've only been reading patreon comments for quite a while, but EZA YouTube comments were totally fine in the first few months or so.

Has anyone else tried playing Xeno2 in portable mode? I usually play my Switch on TV and just try out portable mode for a minute with every game and Xeno2 is BAAAAD. First of all it doesn’t hold up that well visually since it has lots of jaggies (though when you’re used to playing on portables, that’s a very tiny issue that doesn’t really make having such a huge game on handheld any less impressive) but the fans on my Switch were going crazy as if the console was gonna explode.

Maybe Ben addresses it but I’m not gonna watch the review until I’m done (Though I’ve no doubt it’s a great review).

I did yeah, I also noted some pretty jarring framerate issues. It's definitely not looking good in handheld mode right now.

Hopefully its just youtube comments and not coming at him from everywhere.

Complaining about review scores is so stupid, especially when there's no way people have even beaten XC2 yet.

  21. I'd love to see the video stats for how many people just skip straight to the final 30 seconds of the review.

So framerate is bad in handheld mode too? Because it’s really bad in TV mode but for some reason Zelda ran smoother in handheld mode so I thought that might’ve been the case here as well.

Yeah that would be BTW with its freezes against Monk instead, the frame rate isn't bad, it's very much playable.

  29. It's playable, yet, it's bad.

It's a throwback to an era where sub 30 constantly was acceptable. In Zelda it was limited to a few areas and the rest of the time it was 30 or high 30s

This. Just because something is playable doesn’t mean it isn’t bad. It’s only playable because of the type of combat the game has but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s almost a slideshow at times.

Calling framerate that isn’t even locked at 30 “okay” is being way too lenient.

The whole game seems disappointing technically. I think that's a result of the B team working on it, Monolith spreading themselves thin with many projects (XCX, XC2, BotW, new project) and the game having a really quick turn around. I think the game could have benefitted from being released mid 2018 instead, but I guess Nintendo keeps a really tight schedule with the Switch.

The recent PSX betting special is indeed great, yet the results show may end up as comically as the PGW and TGS ones because these venues simply couldn't keep up with the Allies' dreams.
If only Nintendo would announce the inevitable January 2018 direct a week or so before. We could then have a one-off betting special, classic Huber-Bosman setup, but a little shorter in order to keep editing/filming in check.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the reason there's a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 backlash is because so many people were positive about it, but the game itself has a lot of stuff that vocal segments hate. The way a lot of people talked up Xenoblade Chronicles and 2 set a really high bar and that was something it could never hope to meet in those people's minds with all the super anime stuff in the game.

Bad is just a hyperbolic word to use, playable isn't bad. Playable is serviceable or okay. It doesn't dip hard, at least not from I've noticed. I think I'll lay of after this post if it's off topic.

Disagree. Playable should not be the standard we measure quality of games with. A perfectly functioning game can be bad. Art should be critiqued like a movie (or similar media) not like an iphone. If you don't think it is art, fair enough.

That’s kinda where I stand as well. I’m certainly having a great time with Xeno2 for factors outside of its framerate but “perfectly functioning” is the very least we should expect of something we give our money to and shouldn’t be all you need to reach to be considered quality.

The comment Ben tweeted about is not particularly vile or malicious. But it is ill-informed and unfair and can be deliberately analyzed though thanks to aggregation tools to answer the question, "Is Ben Moore kinder to JRPGs on average compared to other people in the industry?" The first score will be Ben's and the second will be the industry average.

    Xenoblade Chronicles 2: 80/84
    Fire Emblem Warriors: 75/75
    YS VIII: 80/86
    Ever Oasis: 60/78
Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia: 80/84
    Persona 5: 100/94
    Final Fantasy XV: 90/81
    Xenoblade Chronicles X: 86/85

More often than not, Ben judges JRPGs more harshly on average than the rest of the industry. The only major exceptions to that are Persona 5 and Final Fantasy XV. My call: the criticism was not true.

I'm finding Xenoblade 2 to be good but it clearly needed more time in development so it could be better optimized. Also the gameplay is very challenging to learn.

I don't really notice any framerate drops but the drop in image quality is staggering at times and I can't imagine playing it in portable mode. I also think the game suffers from too many mechanics that aren't explained well enough. I have a handle on most of it but that's thanks to video guides/posts in the OT and not the game itself. Even more ridiculous is that tutorials are one-and-done, you can't access them again in a menu if you've forgotten something.

The game's existence is justified on soundtrack alone though.

Xenoblade 2 is great, and I still need to throw a lot more of my time at it. My hot take though, is that they could have dropped plenty of stuff and been better.

I was pretty surprised considering how bad comments are that when I looked at Ian’s most recent Ryan Thompson video that other than 3 negative comments, there was a lot of love outpouring for Ian. Admittedly just skimmed but wasn’t near as bad as I expected.

I think it's because the people that even click on an easy update are already on board with Ian in general. Also, the subject matter is probably making people comment who usually don't comment at all.

  48. Unfortunately when you try to be apolitical and just talk about video games and do your best to appease everyone it creates an environment for a lot of alt right, gamergaters, and in general bad people to take root. Eventually they are going to show their colors though because it is impossible to never talk about a social issue. Like sexual harassment in the video game industry. Mainly because those same people take a lack of a comment as tacit approval.

Honestly? A lot of them have been there since GT, they just weren't as vocal. Yesterday I had a look at the EZA subreddit and alongside all the absurd Resetera hate (apparently being progressive is "dangerous"!), you've got people there saying they loved GT/EZA because they never did things like condemn GamerGate. Being apolitical these days, particularly in gaming, is an open invite to all kinds of toxic people, which has been extremely noticeable in the EZA community over the last 6 or so months. I mean fuck, when there are people unpledging because EZA condemned Nazi's (Nazi's!), you know there's some issues there.

Having said that, while Brandon's response last week in CoJ was infuriating in how he shrugged off and ignored all the issues people brought up, from what I recall, he did also say that they'd start discussing political issues more often, so I'm guessing they've finally recognised this.
