And? Every bug that lives around me doesn't change the fact that adding a freeloading animal to the mix, with it's own parasitic ecosystem is not going to help matters. The defence for animals stating "You are dirty too" is so much nonsense. I can minimise my dirt and the dirt around me. Pets don't give a shit how nasty they are. Animal hair , don't care.

If you've grown up in a place without pets, adjusting to having them around isn't easy. My girlfriend has always allowed her dog to go wherever she likes, which is something that isn't going to happen when they both move into my place. I just can't deal with having animal smells where I sleep, for example. I mean, some absolutely are. On the flipside though, there's plenty of people who don't live with animals who are somehow equally or more disgusting. Takes all sorts.
You can really tell who has been around kids and who hasn't. They dig it out of their diaper and rub it all over their bodies, the walls, and the crib. All before you have even had your morning coffee.
The smell is the worst part, and of course owners always claim their pets don't smell. No, they do, your nose just got used to it. I like pets but they stay outside. In apartments? big no no.
I don't have any kids of my own true. But I have younger siblings who I shared rooms with and nieces and nephews. Never did any sort of shit that you're describing. I was going to say something else but it was going to come off rather harsh so I'll leave it as that haha.
I leave the house every day. I also get gross and sweaty everyday. But guess what? There is this thing called soap and water and it's a fair bit more effective than licking yourself clean.
What you still fail to understand is this is a rare scenario. If its aaregular occurence, then I blame the parents. But your pet will do this even at age 10. They sniff whatever they see forever.
Kids are nasty too. Every house I've ever been to with young kids has smelled like pee and wet bread.
You get in contact with a lot more shit just walking down the street than with a reasonably clean pet.

Apart from the ridiculous anecdotal evidence of pet owners do you have any kind of actual scientific proof of this? Because once again. The idea that animals are anyway shape or form are cleaner than humans is outright bullshit. It's amazing how germs are everywhere, except on your precious domesticated animals. Ridiculous.
I got used to finding feathers, seeds (cockatiel) and hay (rabbit) in random places. I think it's worth it.
My dog licks my cat's butt sometimes. Or used to, since my cat ran away yesterday and I've been unable to find her yet. :( And your house will only smell "a certain way" if you don't get rid of your pet's piss and shit frequently enough. If your house smells bad, it's not your pet's fault.

I've always felt like people with pets have this massive blindspot about how clean their pets are. Pets make sense when the choice is "is my place going to be infested with mice or will there be a a cat to take care of them." In the modern world, I don't know how they could be seen as clean. And especially not when you have 3 or more of them. As someone with really bad allergies, cat dander accumulates in my lungs and gets spit out and can be seen in my saliva. I have no idea why this stuff affects me so badly, but it's absolutely shocking how much of it is floating around in the air. Most people with pets that I have seen just never clean up at the frequency needed to keep their place relatively clean. Last roommate had a cat, and it puked and pissed literally everywhere it had access to. Then there's the people that don't have a problem being naked around their pets, which just makes it even weirder to me. Even if humans are intrinsically dirty, I can clean up and have a rough idea of how clean various things are. Throw an animal into the mix and that is completely gone. You basically have to assume everything is dirty because your pet can stick its tongue or butt on something like 5 seconds after you wiped down everything. A small child has far less mobility, so there's at least certain places are unlikely to be despoiled by them.
This is such a jarring thread to me, as our animals are essentially our children. Our house doesn't smell a certain way/bad, we clean up diligently. We also love to have our dog (corgi) sleep in bed with us and he loves it too. Finding dust from our cockatiel or bedding/hay thrown everywhere (3 guinea pigs) or fur everywhere; it's home! And simple to clean. I cannot fathom living without animals, but to each their own.
So we have established animals have germs. Good. Now exactly by what measure is an animal cleaner than a human? By how it cleans itself? By how it cleans it's environment? By how it disposes of it's waste? By how it's body excretes toxins? Because I'm not seeing how in any of these scenarios any domesticated animal has an advantage over a human. So again. I will ask again. Where is the proof that animals are cleaner or even as clean as humans?
I don't think anyone has actually said that to be fair. Besides, that magic soap and water you talked about will likely save you from those icky germs from domesticated animals. Problem solved, right? You can get a pet now. I have to say though, judging from your posts in this thread so far you really don't seem to like animals. Or their owners for that matter. Did you go through some traumatic experience or something? The way you seem to look down at people who have the capability to show affection towards them is pretty off-putting too.
Depends on the pet. Cats dont get a pass. I have ferrets, and like cats, they do still sometimes wipe their ass and dirty bits into your floor or carpet after going to the bathroom. It happens. I also have to deal with extra smelliness due to ferrets having stinky glands. I find myself having to wash their hammocks and toys every 2 to 3 months, along with a steam vac on the carpet. Still wouldn't trade the litter buggers for the world.
One thing a lot people don't understand is that clean does not equal free of infectious agents and that dirty doesn't not equal to infectious agents. Clean does not mean safe, dirty does not mean unsafe. Pets, in general, are FAR safer to people than other human being in regards to infections (and physical injuries too). A dirty dog pretty much cannot give ANY infections even if he lick you in the mouth. Shaking the hands of some splotless guy in a suit can give you serious infections (flu, gastro-enteritis viruses, etc). We just don't share many common pathogens. Their bacteria and viruses and mostly harmless to people (and vice-versa). Of course they are exceptions, but they are not common. Ask yourself how many times in your life did you get sick because of something a pet gave you. How many times did you get the flu, stomach flu, cold, STD, etc? I think I can safely say that the second is by far more prevalent. I work with animals (I'm a vet), when I poke myself with a dirty (contaminated) syringe from one of my patient, I have ZERO worries I'll get sick. I am far more likely to get sick from the owners of my patients and my staff than my patients. We deal with and learn about zoonotic diseases (disease than can be transmitted from animal to human). It's one of a vet's job to minimize zoonotic infections. There is really not that many that we have to deal with. Dogs do smell, so does people. People that are not used to the smell of dogs will notice it. People that live with dogs often won't smell it, they become desentitized to it. Some people that are reclusive will find that people stink. While fur might be messy, there is zero harm in it. There is mounting scientific evidence that the rise of allergies and immune disorders in people is cause by the lack of exposure to various organims. Living in a aseptic world actually make you sicker. Most organims are not harmful, and exposing your body to them make your immune system more 'balanced'. There are studies that shows that having kids growing up in a multi pet household decrease the chance of them becoming allergic in general. Germaphobes and petphobics are actually harming themselves instead of protecting themselves.
Dirt is good. Builds up your immune system. Lets you eat taco bell without getting explosive diarrhea.
They absolutely do, and it's because... For a lot of pet owners, the dog or cat is afforded the same level of respect that many people afford their human children. And like parents often do, they believe their baby is perfect and different compared with everyone elses.
I agree with you OP. I want pets but they're so dirty. I wish they had a pet library where you can borrow pets for a while and then return them. Like I want to take a dog to a park or for a walk, and maybe even hang out in my house for a bit, but then I want to return them.
