ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -

Rallies took place on Saturday across the country in regards to President Trump's policy to separate immigrant families.

The "Families Belong Together" rally brought hundreds of people to Rochester's Peace Plaza to show support for separated families, and to decry the policy.

The President signed an executive order to end that policy, but thousands of children remain separated from their parents, since their cases may take months or longer to be processed and completed.

The protests come as more than two-thousand children remain separated from their families, that's according to a Department of Health and Human Services fact sheet that was released on June 20.

"This is not just illegal and, I believe, unconstitutional, it is also immoral and deeply wrong, " Congressman Keith Ellison.

"Families need to be together. All families; gay families lesbian families, non-binary families, transgender families, Muslim families, atheist families, single mother, single fathers, all families should be together," said poet Danny Solis.

"Democracy is consent of the governed, and we do not give our consent for what is happening right now in our country," said Representative  Erin Maye Quade.

More than 700 cities planned protests on Saturday against Trump's 'zero-tolerance' approach towards immigration.

Last week Trump gave into pressure and signed an executive order that ends the policy of separating children from their parents and relatives at the border.

But it is not known when or how the families would be reunited.

The rally at Peace Plaza was organized by Indivisible Rochester in conjunction with the national rally place across the U.S., and hosted by the local Move-On group.
