EVIDENCE: The handgun alleged to have belonged to Mark Duggan

THE JURY at the inquest into the death of Mark Duggan will hear evidence regarding the issue of whether police may have planted a gun found up to 20 feet away from the scene.

The 29-year-old was shot dead by officers in Ferry Lane, Tottenham, north London, in August 2011, before riots occurred in the capital that summer.

Counsel Ashley Underwood QC said the court would hear evidence from a female witness who lived nearby, known as Miss J.

Officers will tell the jury that they acted on intelligence that Duggan was in possession of a gun, and stopped a minicab he was in.

Duggan left the cab and was shot in the bicep and fatally in the chest by an officer, who will state in evidence he was acting in self-defence, believing the Tottenham resident had a gun in his hand.

Following the shooting, police said they found a gun 10ft to 20ft away on the other side of some railings, the inquest heard.

Underwood said: "I need to explore with Miss J whether her evidence suggests a police officer took the gun from the minicab and planted it.

"All of that evidence will give you the opportunity to explore that possibility."

Earlier today at around 1pm, the jurors, and coroner Judge Keith Cutler visited the scene of Duggan’s death.

To replicate the minicab Duggan was sat in the lead up to the incident, a silver people carrier was parked at the scene and the jury was allowed to sit inside.

The jury also assessed the grass area where a gun was found, a few metres away of where Duggan was laying.

The inquest held at the Royal Courts of Justice started on September 16 and will last at least eight weeks.
