Research Interests
Paul Corkum received his PhD from Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pa.) and joined National Research Council of Canada (NRC) 1973. He is best known for introducing many of the concepts describing how intense light pulses interact with atoms or molecules. He was the first to show how to make and measure attosecond pulse and how to use these new methods to image atomic scale matter. In 2001, together with co-workers in Vienna, he produced the world's first attosecond optical pulses. In 2004 his group captured an image of the highest occupied orbital of a Nitrogen molecule. Dr. Corkum holds a Canada Research Chair in Attosecond Photonics at the University of Ottawa and is Director of Attosecond Science at NRC. A member of the Royal Societies of London and of Canada, among his awards are the Royal Society of Canada's Tory medal (2003), the Optical Society's Charles H. Townes award (2005), the IEEE's Quantum Electronics award (2005) and the APS' Schawlow prize (2006). In 2008 he was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Canada and he received the Herzberg Award, Canada's highest award in the Physical Sciences.
