Rovio Acquires Finnish Animation Studio Kombo For Cash and Stock

Do we smell an Angry Birds cartoon series? Angry Birds-maker Rovio said today that it acquired Finnish animation studio Kombo for an undisclosed amount of cash and stock.

The Finnish game developer, which recently raised $42 million from Atomico Ventures and Accel Partners, has been eager to extend its hit into other types of media including everything from plush toys to books to movie deals. The company’s Mighty Eagle Peter Vesterbacka told us earlier this year that he doesn’t want to pigeonhole Rovio as a gaming company. In the same interview, he also alluded to future acquisitions in the non-gaming space that would help the company cross over into other mediums.

And it looks like this is the first serious one. Kombo says it will now focus entirely on Rovio properties and judging by a recent video trailer they made, perhaps we’ll be seeing more than animated shorts.
