City Council recognizes sports hall of fame honorees
Gary Johnson
Gary Johnson was a versatile coach during his 16 years at Terra Nova High School. He coached five sports.
Johnson started at Terra Nova in 1969, hired to teach History and Science while coaching frosh-soph football and track. While at Terra Nova, he coached five years of football, both at the frosh and varsity level, served six years as assistant track coach, eight years as golf coach and 11 years coaching basketball (4 years boys’ frosh-soph, 7 years boys’ varsity).
Johnson also coached the 1971 frosh-soph baseball team that won the North Peninsula League championship.
While Johnson had his hands in all the sports, his best success came on the golf course. Four of his eight teams won the league championship. The Tigers won four consecutive titles (1981-1985). He was named the NPL Coach of the Year in 1983, 1984 and 1985.
A 1963 graduate of Riordan High School in San Francisco, Johnson played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. His collegiate career at San Francisco State University included participation in football and basketball, as well as working as a recreation director, teaching physical education at a private school and coaching teen cub basketball.
During his years at Terra Nova, Johnson served as teacher, attendance supervisor, Department Head of Physical Education and Boys’ Athletic Director.
As a member of the Northern California Football Officials Association, Johnson officiated Pop Warner, NPL and WCAL football games for ten years (1983-1993).
Following his career at Terra Nova, he moved to Westmoor High School in 1985, serving as vice principal for eight years and a five-year term as principal. In 1998, he was appointed Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for the Jefferson Union High School District. In 2005, he became the Deputy Superintendent, retiring in 2007.
