Denmark bow out on a high

Explosive start
On a warm afternoon, the game got off to an explosive start with a splendid English goal after just two minutes. The ball sat up nicely for Rebecca Jane on the edge of the penalty area in England's first attack, and the midfielder's fulminating drive flew over Danish keeper Lene Gissel Rasmussen and into the net.

Industrious midfields
Chances were at a premium for a long spell in the first half as both midfields worked industriously to deny space. Denmark tried to force the pace through their swift combination play, but the English defence kept the dangerous Danish forwards Anne Thirup Rudmose and Pernille Harder under control until a substitution midway through the opening period helped generate an equaliser.

Sørensen impresses
Simone Boye Sørensen replaced Victoria Black and made an immediate impression, firing a low 28th-minute shot into the corner of the net after Rudmose and the astute Katrine Veje had fashioned the opportunity. Denmark began brightly after the interval too, but English captain Gemma Bonner almost restored her side's advantage, only to see a close-range effort from a corner blocked by Rasmussen Gissel. Jessica Holbrook then fired over as England tried to wrest back the initiative.

Late Danish strikes
A wonderful strike from the Danes finally swung matters in their favour after 66 minutes. Amanda Marie Hohol found herself in space 25 metres out and tried her luck with a marvellous right-footed attempt that screamed past English goalkeeper Lauren Davey. Rudmose then crowned a fine individual performance by netting from close range in the dying minutes, and Linette Andreasen grabbed a late fourth to assure Denmark of third place on the podium at the end of an excellent European tournament.
