HIGH BRIDGE GLENS PARK

by Mary McClureHave you ever wanted to know more about the history of High Bridge Glens – the early amusement park that made Cuyahoga Falls a Victorian-era travel sensation? Make plans to attend the May meeting of the Cuyahoga Falls Historical Society, where local author Mary McClure will give a presentation on the history of High Bridge Glens.

High Bridge Glens, which was located along the banks of the Cuyahoga River near Front and Prospect streets from 1879-1895, was known not only for its great natural beauty, but also its early roller coaster – believed to be one of the first in the U.S. At the height of its popularity, the Glens attracted up to 10,000 visitors a day, roughly four times the population of Cuyahoga Falls at that time.

Mary has spent more than two decades researching the park and collecting Glens memorabilia. In 2012, she published the first pictorial history of the park – “High Bridge Glens of Cuyahoga Falls,” part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America Series. Since that time, she has found several additional rare photographs of the Glens, which will also be included in her presentation. Copies of Mary’s book on the Glens will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation.
