Building bespoke, technically-challenging structures in wood for 20 years
If you need to commission a large or complex structure built in wood, you need to talk to Kiwanda Technical Wood Services. KTWS is the technical wood solutions arm of Kiwanda Woodworking and specialises in building complicated, multi-sided shapes in wood. Whether it’s for an icing wind tunnel testing structure or two-storey bookcase made of steel clad in veneer, KTWS will deliver on time, to an agreed price and with an outstanding level of craftsmanship where it matters most.
While it’s true that any decent carpenter should in theory be able to build what you want, why take any risk when budgets are at stake and when you can leverage KTWS’s 20 years’ experience in building and supplying University engineering departments and architects with bespoke, highly engineered wood constructions and structures?
With Kiwanda Technical Wood Services you get:
Cost-effective solutions as standard
We understand budget constraints and because of the way we make our commissions, we are reasonably priced for what we do. We always deliver on time and to budget and the quality of our finishes can be seen in our portfolio pieces.
Depth of experience in building for time-critical projects
We have significant experience in building icing wind tunnels testing structures but have also built and installed multiple bespoke high end shop fittings as well as other technically challenging projects involving glass, steel and wood. All needed to be delivered on time to allow other suppliers’ components to be installed and the project completed successfully.
An ability to successfully interpret even the sketchiest of designs
Because of our technical background we understand how to move from a basic concept sketch or the clean lines of an architects drawing, to a working solution for delivering a finished product, given the limitations of budget and manufacturing resources.
A skill set and resources that includes
- Auto CAD 2D and 3D proficiency to City and Guild level
- Solidworks modelling
- Experience of building large structures
- Connected to a manufacturing network that includes:
- Metalwork, Precision Engineering and Plastics
- Furniture making skills
- Traditional joinery skills
- Fully tooled up woodworking workshop
- Access to CNC routing equipment
- A willingness and ability to problem solve
Charlie and his team were brilliant. They were easy going and nice to work with … really helpful with technical and design advice while we developed ideas. They were fast, efficient and tidy and the level of workmanship which they produced was absolutely outstanding. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Kiwanda.
Kiwanda has provided us both with dependable service and excellent workmanship. They have taken our design briefs and worked them up into a range of things like our University icing wind tunnel with no fuss and delivered the final objects to the agreed price. They are not our nearest potential supplier but we have had no reason to seek out another as the combination of service, value and quality is right for us and I believe rather special.
We commissioned Kiwanda Technical Wood Services to supply and help design a new shopfront for our premises in Western Road, Hove in 2016. As with the previous commissions that KTWS has undertaken for us over the years, the ability to deliver on time was crucial.
They were most helpful in working through the available guidance supplied by the local Planning Office. They developed an attractive, practical design which was in keeping with the heritage status of the location. Using old photographs and a University of Brighton Shopfront Pattern Book they developed a design which included turned mullions and fluted pilasters.
We were most pleased with the final product which exceeded our expectations. Above all they were able to expertly install it during a very tight fit-out schedule …
We would warmly recommend KTWS.
Kiwanda undertook a very complex project for us. A 6 metre high double height double sided bookcase. It provides some 50 linear metres of book storage with a clear glass access walkway high up with glass rails.
The project required Kiwanda to work from an architect’s sketch to design a practical structure using his own specialist structural and glass engineers to meet Building Regulations. The structure was pre-manufactured in large pieces in the workshop and then assembled on site by Kiwanda’s team, step by step. Kiwanda took charge of all aspects including the steel and glass installation.
We are delighted with the result which met the brief fully and looks even better. And it was far better value than London joiners could offer.
We have worked with Charlie on numerous projects over the last 8 years or so. His joinery is of the highest quality and I really enjoy his design input and knowledge of materials and joinery techniques. I would highly recommend him and his team.
Charlie was recommended by the contractor working on a large new private house in Sussex. Charlie and his team quickly assessed the design and fabrication requirements with competitive costing and then efficiently produced and installed the furniture to a very high standard to the delight of the client. We will be using Kiwanda whenever possible and have no hesitation in recommending them.
