    About the Author:  A Lutherville, MD, native, Steve Bender was exiled to Alabama in 1983 for reasons that remain secret to this day. He loves fried okra and often selects dinner wine based on whether it goes well with fried okra. His mission is to make gardening uplifting, accessible, and inspirational to all.
    Steve Bender is a Southern Living Garden editor.

  • James Rivers Movement

    James Rivers is a New Orleans musical treasure. He plays a mixture of rock, progressive jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel.  It is the sort of music that implies something for everybody. Rivers, one of only three jazz musicians ever known to play the bagpipes, would probably call himself a saxophonist, but his forte is really an amazing musical dexterity that has helped him master a dozen other instruments.   • Rose Propagation Workshop

    Learn how to propagate our beloved New Orleans old garden roses!  Don Hanson will teach how to choose the right rose and make the proper cuttings needed for propagation. You will leave with a wealth of information about rose propagation, care and maintenance as well as a propagated rose. This is a hands on program and all materials are included with this workshop. The class will last an hour and a half and is $15/person. The class is limited to 25 people and registration is required beforehand at scapley@nocp.org.     Don Hanson is a rose enthusiast and volunteer at the New Orleans Botanical Garden. He is a Master Gardener and over the years he has been a member of the New Orleans Old Garden Rose Society and the New Orleans Rose Society. He has experience in pruning, caring for roses, and rose propagation. Don is a very entertaining speaker who makes learning fun!
    Class Location: Garden Study Center, New Orleans Botanical Garden in City Park.

    the French word for Gypsy.  Fun, fresh, and creative, Harmonouche plays music loaded with charisma and international flavor. This New Orleans gypsy traditional jazz band combines world class musicianship and a good dose of humor to deliver a unique sound orchestrated with jazz guitar, diatonic harmonica, singing, whistling, accordion, piano, clarinet and saxophone.   • “Grafting Vegetables”

    Grafting vegetables is not a new practice but one that many gardeners have little to no experience. Grafting vegetables has many possible advantages including resistance to root diseases, tolerance to temperature extremes, tolerance to salinity, and higher yields. This workshop will provide students with information about grafting vegetables, what materials are needed, and sources for plants and materials. The class includes a hands-on grafting. All participants will receive a grafted tomato plant and an un-grafted plant of the same variety  to take home. The plants you graft during the class will also be available for you to pick up a few weeks later if the graft is successful. The class runs from 12:30pm to 2pm.

  • The Yat Pack
