Our programmes have been designed to expose you to many different aspects of diplomacy and international governance. Experts from academia and industry will share their insights to guide and support your own discoveries and learning.
We work alongside academic colleagues from across the University to ensure that you have a postgraduate experience of the highest quality. You will work collaboratively with academic staff and each other to enrich your studies and support local organisations in search of your subject expertise and advanced academic skills.
Brexit diplomacy
Diplomacy is at the heart of many key issues facing the UK today, particularly the developments and repercussions of Britain's exit from the EU, which is often referred to in shorthand as Brexit. Over the coming years, you will have the opportunity to become experts in this critical topic, as it unfolds around you in London.
Our Diplomacy and International Governance Director, Professor Helen Drake is leading a research team of colleagues from across the University and other institutions which focuses on this important topic. Helen is passionate about her research, and often discusses her findings with her students.

Alongside an exciting mix of guest contributors, our team of academic teaching staff includes:
Professor Helen Drake, Diplomacy and International Governance Director. Helen is Professor of French and European Studies and specialises in European Union studies and the study of contemporary France. Helen is currently leading a major research project on Brexit, entitled ‘28+ Perspectives on Brexit: a guide to the multi-stakeholder negotiations’. Helen will draw on this research when it comes to the study of Brexit diplomacy and its vital importance for the UK’s future place in the world. Dr Nicola Chelotti, Lecturer in Diplomacy and International Governance. Nicola's teaching and research interests focus on negotiations, diplomacy and regional and international organisations, as well as the EU. Nicola is a researcher on the project ‘28+ Perspectives on Brexit: a guide to the multi-stakeholder negotiations’. He is also involved in other projects including the analysis of the EU’s activities at the United Nations and the legislative powers of the European Parliament in the EU’s economic governance.
Dr Tatevik Mnatsakanyan, Lecturer in Diplomacy and International Governance. Tatevik's areas of research and teaching centre on theories of international relations and diplomacy. Tatevik's strengths include a particular emphasis on security studies, particularly critical approaches to security. Her substantive research has focused on US and UK foreign and security policy, though her current and developing research interests include Russia-West relations and normative approaches to diplomacy.
Ms Hayet Bahri, Lecturer in Diplomacy and International Governance. Hayet's teaching and research interests focus on communication, bilingual communication and internationalisation of Higher Education.
Dr Lewis Herrington, University teaching fellow in diplomacy and international governance. Lewis' current research specialises in questions of terrorism and the rise of extremism and radicalisation in the UK and internationally. Lewis leads teaching on intelligence and diplomacy, and contributes to several other modules across many of our programmes.
Dr Ozge Ozduzen, British Academy Newton International Postdoctoral Fellow, Institute for Diplomacy and International Governance. Currently, Ozge is working on two manuscripts which examine online and offline memory of Occupy Gezi across digital platforms and symbolic geographies in Istanbul, such as previously occupied parks, focusing on the spatial and nostalgic dynamics of Gezi anniversaries, cultural and political events in online and offline spaces, including practices of video activism in an increasingly authoritarian setting.
Dr Aidan McGarry, Reader in International Politics, Institute for Diplomacy and International Governance. Aidan’s research focuses on social movements, political voice and marginalised communities, particularly Roma. He is the author of four books including Romaphobia: The Last Acceptable Racism in Europe (Zed, London, 2017). His research has been published in leading international journals including Ethnopolitics, Social Movement Studies, Ethnic and Migration Studies, Critical Social Policy and Ethnicities. He was Principal Investigator of a £250,000 AHRC funded international project 'The Aesthetics of Protest: Visual Culture and Communication in Turkey’ which ran from 2016-2018.
Dr Cristian Nitoiu, Lecturer in Diplomacy and International Governance. Dr Cristian Nitoiu’s teaching and research interest focus on the foreign policy of Russia and the EU, the international relations of the BRICS countries, EU-Russia relations, Eastern Europe, international relations, the European public sphere and international political communication.
Dr Tim Oliver, Senior Lecturer in Diplomacy and International Governance. Tim's research and teaching currently focus on Brexit, British politics, London, European politics, international relations and international security. He has combined work in academia (LSE, UCL, NYU and the EUI) with work in political institutions (the House of Lords and the European Parliament), think tanks (in Berlin, Washington D.C. and London) and with the British military.

As a research student with us, you will have the opportunity to work with leading researchers and industry professionals in order to gain first-hand experience of real-life problem solving. You will gain the skills required to address complex issues involving modern diplomacy, international security, international business and trade, global communication, and information management.
Our PhD students receive a comprehensive package of training and support to continue into a professional research career, or to progress into a number of analytical roles with regional, international and multinational organisations or a governing body.
