SRUC Students web page IS info

Welcome to the SRUC Information Systems (IS) student info page. At SRUC we provide software and systems to assist you with your studies. We offer support through the IS Service Desk. Below is some useful information to assist you.

Getting Started

Online Matriculation/Self Registration

If you are asked to matriculate online, please do so by accessing the SRUC Portal.

If you are unable to matriculate online before you arrive, then bring your SRUC acceptance letter with you. This will tell you your student number, you will need this to matriculate on campus.

SRUC Student Logon details

Your username to access SRUC IS systems is the same as your matriculation number. You will create your password when you participate in the IS Induction on campus.

If you have forgotten your password, you can reset it online, contact the IS Service Desk or visit your campus libarary.

Your password will expire every 90 days. If you do not create a new password when prompted, your password will expire and you will not be able to logon. If this happens, contact the IS Service Desk or Library for assistance.

Once you have changed your password you will need to update this on any devices used to access Eduroam Wi-Fi in order to stay connected.

Please note our Acceptable Use Policy regarding SRUC systems.

Email

As an SRUC student, you have been provided with a Microsoft Office 365 e-mail account which can be used to keep in touch with your tutors and fellow students.

To access your emails:

  • Click here to access Microsoftonline.com
  • Enter your student e-mail address (Sxxxxxxxx@student.sruc.ac.uk)
  • Enter your password

You need to check your student mailbox regularly as this is the only email account that SRUC will use to communicate with you.

For more information on setting your student e-mail account up and how to set your account to forward to a personal e-mail address, please see this guide.

Accessing your student e-mail account on your Smartphone

If you have your own Smartphone such as an iPhone, Blackberry or an Android-powered one such as a Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One, etc. you can set up your student account on it.

To do this please see the 'Accessing your student e-mails on your Smartphone' document.

Downloading Office 365

SRUC Students are able to download a copy of Office 365 for their personal PC's.

To download the software click on the link here and follow the instructions on the Microsoft site.

Wi-Fi

Eduroam is a free Wi-Fi service that is used by educational and research institutions all over the world. It allows students and staff to log in with the same details at any of them.

If you have an Apple or Android device, all simply select the Eduroam Wi-Fi connection and enter your username & password in the following format:

  • Username: Your student matriculation number followed by @sruc.ac.uk (e.g S00012345@sruc.ac.uk - NOT your student e-mail address!)
  • Password: The password you use to log into the Student Desktop and computers when you're on campus

If you have a computer that's running on Windows 7, 8 or 10, please see the document which includes a step-by-step guide on connecting to Eduroam.

Printing

While you are studying at SRUC, there's a high chance that you'll need to print out some of your work at some point. To help with this, there are large multi-function printers (which can also scan and photocopy) situated on each campus. Here you will be able to print out your work in black and white or colour onto A4 and A3 paper.

You will receive an initial £6 print balance. You can top-up your printing balance at any of the SRUC libraries by simply asking the library staff. They will also be able to show you how to use the large multi-function printers and help you with any other queries you might have.

The cost of printing varies depending on the size of the paper you're printing onto and if it is in black & white or colour.

Here's a breakdown of the current printing costs:

  • 1x A4 page of black & white: 2p
  • 1x A4 page of colour: 4p
  • 1x A3 page of black & white: 2p
  • 1x A3 page of colour: 4p

If you are experiencing problems when trying to print or have any queries, please contact the IS Service Desk and we'll be happy to help.

Working off campus

All students at SRUC have access to the 'Student Desktop'. This is a really useful remote desktop service that allows you to log in over the internet and use your own device just as if you were using a computer on campus.

There are many benefits to using the Student Desktop:

  • You have access to all of the files on your 'H' drive and the 'P' drive, meaning that you don't need to carry your work around with you on a USB memory stick, which can be easily lost or broken.
  • All of the work you save to your 'H' or the 'P' drives is regularly backed up, so is incredibly safe and secure. If anything does go wrong (i.e. you accidentally delete an important file) we can quickly restore it for you.
  • The Student Desktop gives you FREE access to important software that you'll need to use to do your coursework, including the full Microsoft Office suite.
  • You can bring your own laptop or tablet computer into the college with you and use the printers on campus when logged into the Student Desktop on it.

For information on how to access the Student Desktop from your own Windows PC, Apple Mac or Android device, please go to: sruc.ac.uk/studentdesktop.
