If you’re getting married soon(ish) and you’re wondering how to be the best wedding photography consumers around, take some notes from Erin & Madeleine. Why are they the best? First, they thoroughly checked out our portfolio, and then they met with us in person to see if there was some chemistry, and then they asked us for references from past couples for whom we’d been photographers. Then, and only then, they made their decision. After all this friendly but calculated personal contact, we became friends and they were confident in our ability. Which is what you want from your wedding photographers. Your photographers will be with you during your entire day….so you want to feel friendly towards them, and you want to have confidence in their abilities.
Not long after that, we shot their engagement session at York Redoubt, and it was just awesome. We got to know how important Erin’s dog was to her, and we got some of Madeleine’s fascinating story (spoilier: she came from Germany and is in med-school now).
As they got to know us, we got to know them. We got inspired and we got the boundaries of our envelope pushed. “We’ll make shit up”, Erin said about how they’d organize their wedding. I both LOVED and SQUIRMED when I heard her say that. I loved it because Rae and I firmly believe that weddings are intensely personal, intensely emotional, and fundamentally magic (literally. Think about it: you have a special person who casts the spell of matrimony on you), so ideally, they should be as personally crafted as possible, to be more most meaningful. I squirmed because that meant it would be unique, and the type-A personality in me likes to know how I’m going to shoot, how I’m going to light things, etc. Whatever. It’s their wedding, not my photo shoot.
And they made their wedding their own, beautifully. There were tears, there was laughter, there was connection, there was spontaneity. There was flexibility! Let me tell you….10 mintues before their seaside, outdoor ceremony, it began to rain. Rain hard. How did they react? Laughter and patience. Their guests pulled the chairs beneath the adjacent tarp and the ceremony was delayed a little. No biggie.
I could go on……
