Louisiana Department of Revenue resumes full customer service operations at New Orleans Office...Continue Reading

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans office of the Louisiana Department of Revenue has resumed full customer service operations five days a week for individual and business taxpayers, the department announced Tuesday.

“We recognize that reducing operations to one-day-a-week-by-appointment-only several years ago left a void for taxpayers in the New Orleans area,” Secretary of Revenue Kimberly Lewis Robinson said. “With the stabilization of our budget under the Edwards administration, we are able to resume the level of customer service that New Orleans-area taxpayers need and deserve.”

The office is open for walk-in customer service Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Services include:

·         Filing and paying business taxes

·         Submitting completed state individual income tax returns (staff cannot assist with the completion of tax returns)

·         Boat registrations

·         ATC/Video Poker/Lottery/Driver’s License/Wildlife & Fisheries tax clearances

·         Payment plans

·         Special events registrations

·         Resolving bank levies and wage garnishments

The office is located at:

Benson Towers

1450 Poydras Street, Suite 800

New Orleans, LA 70112

New state sales tax rate goes into effect July 1...Continue Reading

BATON ROUGE – Effective July 1, 2018, Louisiana’s overall state sales tax rate decreases from 5 percent to 4.45 percent. The new rate, enabled by House Bill 10 of the 2018 Third Extraordinary Session of the Louisiana Legislature, is to be levied upon the sale at retail, the use, the consumption, the distribution and the lease or rental of an item of tangible personal property; and upon the sale of services.

Any dealer that charges a 5 percent state sales tax rate on or after July 1, 2018, must remit the excess collected tax to the Louisiana Department of Revenue.

Also beginning July 1, 2018, a state sales tax rate of 2 percent is to be levied for the sale at retail, the use, the consumption, the distribution, and the storage to be used or consumed of steam, water, electric power or energy, natural gas, or other energy sources for non-residential use (“business utilities”).

The Louisiana Department of Revenue has issued Revenue Information Bulletin 18-016 to provide an explanation of the provisions of HB 10.

Louisiana Department of Revenue statement on Supreme Court’s Wayfair decision...Continue Reading

BATON ROUGE – The Supreme Court overruled the physical presence requirement in Quill for remote retailers, but the high court remanded the case back to the lower court for further decisions on the South Dakota law.

While Louisiana is in a good position having adopted a provision very similar to the South Dakota law, we are still some time away from a final decision and seeing the full impact. It should be noted that Louisiana is currently collecting sales tax from some of the nation’s largest online retailers, including Amazon, and smaller companies as well.

It is far too soon for a definitive estimate of what the state will receive from online sales as a result of today’s decision, but when appropriate, we will provide updates.
