Grantee in the News: Joe Verghese in NY Times on social dancing and delaying dementia

On April 30th 2019, The New York Times featured insights from AFAR expert Joe Verghese, MBBS in an article about the long term health benefits of dance. The article references a study led by Verghese’s team, which found that social dancing may decrease the risk of developing dementia. Dr. Verghese is a 2004 Paul B. AFAR congratulates Ana Maria Cuervo, MD, PhD on her election into the esteemed National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Cuervo is a 2008 Vincent Cristofalo Rising Star Award in Aging Research recipient and 2000 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grant for Junior Faculty recipient. She also serves as Co-Director of the Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, for which AFAR serves as the Coordinating Center.   On April 23, 2019,  Newsweek spotlighted research by four AFAR experts Vera Gorbunova, PhD, Brian K. Kennedy, PhD, Andrei Seluanov, PhD, and Jan Vijg, PhD. The Newsweek article explores their recent finding on how Sirituin 6 (SIRT6) gene repairs DNA and cellular stress resistence—a key to potential treatments to extend healthspan as we grow older. The team co-authored an article on this research, published in Cell journal on April 16, 2019.
