As you know, each year we hold an auction to raise money to donate to the SD Botanic (Quail) Garden. Don’t forget you can bring in plants and also miscellaneous garden related items.

An auction is a great way to add to your collection – you bring a plant to be auctioned (donating part or all of the proceeds to the garden), then you bid and take home a nice plant for yourself.

YIKES! We forgot to send around the Auction signup at our last meeting, so we are sure hoping that those 15 or so people who raised their hand at the July meeting won’t be the only ones bringing plants.

Following are the specifics:

  • You may donate 100% to the garden, or do a 70/30% split w/70% to you and 30% to the garden.
  • We love to have those beautiful show-type plants – they are an excellent way to enhance one’s collection.
  • However, people also love nice plants for their landscape.
  • So, you may bring some desirable quality plants that may be in clean plastic pots or a simpler ceramic pot.
  • And as we have announced, this year we will have a regular auction as well as a Silent Auction.
  • For regular auction, plants and other items – they should be something you might buy at a nice nursery for say $15 on up.
  • The Silent Auction will be for plants worth approx. $5 –15.
  • They MUST all be clean, dry, bug free, manicured as needed, debris removed, and in clean pots, etc.
  • All plants should be labeled with the plants name.
  • Think of these as a VERY NICE Raffle Table plants, maybe something unusual.
  • Or perhaps you make beautiful dish gardens and would like to create and donate one. They should of gift giving quality.
  • Lastly, perhaps you have some garden art, funky or traditional, a nice show pot, or other garden items you no longer need but that someone else might treasure.
  • Bidding will start at $10 – $15 and up.

Check-in Welcome Table – Members and guests sign-in here. There is also a sign-up sheet to bring in Refreshments, along with pamphlets, meeting announcements, and other misc. items to share.

Programs – Experts in the hobby present a variety of programs, usually with a Power Point or slide show. Most are experts in the field who are well known guest presenters, sometimes internationally known. Occasionally club members will speak.

Plant of the Month – A different cactus or succulent is featured and there is a short presentation with basic information. Members are encouraged to bring in their specimens of the featured plant to share.

Brag Table – Bring in your favorite plants and show them off!  This is a mini-competition with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners chosen in Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced divisions of both cactus and succulents. Members get a chance to see each other’s special plants, and this is also excellent practice for our big October Show held at San Diego Botanic (Quail) Garden. Various people judge, and details about each plant are discussed as they are evaluated. Winners earn points towards choosing from a selection of beautiful plants at the December Luncheon. Winning 1st place earns 3 points, 2nd place earns 2 points, 3rd place earns 1 point, plus you get 1 point just for entering!

Exchange Table – Cactus and succulent enthusiasts love to share, and this is the place! Bring in cuttings and/or plants, used pottery not quite good enough for the Benefit Drawing, etc. and get a ticket to participate in the Exchange Table drawing. Tickets are randomly drawn and each person chooses what they want from the wide assortment available. This is an excellent way to share your surplus and to collect a cutting or plant that you’ve been searching for far and wide.

Benefit Drawing – Each month members donate plants, pottery, or other garden related items to the Benefit Drawing. These items should be a bit nicer than those for the Exchange Table. The club also provides plants to enlarge the selection. Tickets are $1, or 6 for $5, with proceeds going to help support the Club Library. At the end of the meeting the drawing is held and winners choose one of the donated items. This is the place to pick up some more special plants.

Sales Table – Members can sell plants they have grown, in addition to pots, rocks, and other merchandise of interest to succulent fanatics. Plants must have 2 sticks – one with the plant’s name and one with your name and the price. Speakers frequently bring special plants related to the topic of the day.

Library – Our library has over 200 books, journals, etc. that members may check out. Most are not available at your local library. New books are purchased regularly and we welcome suggestions.

Name Tag Door Prizes – Each member who wears their name tag to the meeting will get a ticket. Just after the break 3 plants will be raffled off!  The purpose of this is to encourage everyone to sign in and wear their name tags so that members and guests know who you are! This will help create a friendlier, more social club where members won’t be embarrassed by not knowing a person’s name.

RefreshmentsMembers take turns bringing in snacks for the break. Sign up and treat everyone to your specialty or something else that’s tasty!

Socialize – Spend some time with old friends and get to know other fellow members who share this rewarding hobby. Introduce yourself to someone you don’t know. The club is full of wonderful people with a wide range of interests!
