High-Performance SteelA budget friendly, reliable, top-of-the-line Chinese produced steel, 8Cr13MoV steel has carbon and slightly less nickel for hardness and edge retention. Kershaw’s precision heat treated 8Cr13MoV steel strongly takes and holds an edge and offers wear resistance that can withstand damage from both abrasive and adhesive wear. 8Cr13MoV is a value blade steel featuring high performing characteristics. |
Attractive Blade CoatingWhen a knife design requires a lighter blade to highlight the steel, Kershaw often applies a satin finish. Satin finishes, whether machine-generated or otherwise, leave faint patterns of lines on the steel, and while they sand away the steel’s brightness, they do not remove it as completely as do other finishes. A satin finish also helps reduce evidence of stains and scratches on the blade. Titanium Carbo-Nitride blade coating produces an attractive, sleek black or gray blade coating that increases the blades hardness and helps to maintain a razor-sharp edge. Increasing the overall lifetime of the blade, Titanium Carbo-Nitride’s thin film coating achieves enhanced abrasive wear resistance and erosion resistance. The vacuum process is non-toxic and environmentally safe. |
Fast DeploymentUsing a torsion bar to move the blade out of the handle, Kershaw’s revolutionary SpeedSafe Assisted Opening system enables smooth, secure, fast one-handed blade deployment. Apply manual pressure to the flipper or thumb stud with a light push or pull back to overcome resistance of the torsion bar, and the blade opens smoothly and locks into place for confident handling without premature closure. |
Secure Locking SystemKershaw’s frame lock design makes knives safer, securer, sturdier and quicker for one-handed blade deployment. The knife handle, or frame, has two metal plates on either side of the blade, and when open, the lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent blade closure. To close the knife blade, push the frame to the side to unlock the blade and fold the blade back into the handle. |

One-Handed FlipperKnives with SpeedSafe open have two options for one-handed blade deployment. To activate the smooth, instant open, user can push a thumbstud or press a flipper. The flipper on SpeedSafe assisted knives is easy to operate by both left- and right-handed users. And, once blade swings open and locks into place, flipper either disappears for aesthetics or remains visible for added finger protection. |
Durable HandleStainless steel contains chromium to equip knife handles to withstand rusting and provide corrosion resistance. Stainless steel offers durability and is often used in combination with another material to make for an easier grip. Offering excellent durability, stainless steel knife handles often incorporate etching, patterns, ridges or lines for a less slippery grip. |
Convenient PocketclipKershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple options, while others, such as the single position pocketclip, do not. A single position pocketclip is normally tip-down, left side carry, but might be tip-up, right side carry depending on the particular knife. Single position pocketclips can be removed. |

My mother in law got me this for Christmas 2011 and I love this knife. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have a thumb catch to open it with, but that is very minor as the horn on the lower part of the blade is easy to push and the blade swings out very fast. That horn is part of the blade and it makes a good "hilt" (folders don't have proper hilts though) for your finger to rest up against while cutting or thrusting. The lines of the blade are very nice in my opinion, and the smooth edge will be easy to sharpen, but I loath the idea of taking off the factory edge.
The pocket clip is very stiff/firm, which is a good thing because it will not move or fall off of what it's clipped to without a bit more pressure than most require but it is still easy to get out. The handle is comfortable and offers excellent grip.
The sharpness of this blade out of the box cannot be overstated, it is VERY sharp in addition to being a well designed blade, so it will cut easily through just about anything you're likely to need it for with little effort. Just as an example, I was using it to cut a chicken leg off of a thigh yesterday and it cut through the bone joint so easily that I'd though it missed the bone, then I pulled out my plastic fork (eating at a dining facility in Afghanistan) and there were tines missing because it cut through the fork and the bone effortlessly!
The price with this knife on sale made me buy two more immediately after Christmas, but even at full price this knife is easily worth it (but I refuse to pay full price for anything anymore). If it's on sale I will buy more for gifts and just to keep an extra for myself because I like it even better than my other bigger and more expensive Kershaw. I trust this knife enough to keep it with me in Afghanistan for general all around use and as a last ditch defense against the random Jackal or wild dog that sometimes wanders onto the base (the ~3" blade is long enough to be a decent defensive weapon if you have need). It deploys smoothly and more quickly than any other spring assisted knife I've had, it looks great (better in person than in the pics), and most importantly it cuts well.
Also, the extra two shipped and arrived within the same 5 day period, I was pleasantly surprised.
The OSO Sweet has become my favorite pocket knife. It's just what the name says, oh so sweet. It's exceptionally well-made, has good steel, it's attractive, has a nice, assuring heft without feeling like a boat anchor. It's made in China, but at this price point you simply won't find anything better, anywhere.
Someone at Kershaw definitely cares about quality control, as this knife in no way looks or feels 'low-priced'.
1. Fit and finish: I'll rate it a 10 out of 10. Mine is flawless, I cannot criticize it. It feels great in my hand, and has a distinctive feel. There's no 'jinking' on the blade, but there is some on the back strap. Great ergonomics.
2. Quality of material: Again, 10 out of 10. The G10 handle material is nicely rounded and has a non-slip pattern on it that feels good in your hand. The blade material? Kershaw states this is a Chinese knife steel with the same makeup as AUS-8. From other knives I own I'd tend to agree with this (meaning they sharpen similarly) although I'm no metallurgist.
3. Sharpness 'right out of the box': 7 out of 10. On this factor I was slightly disappointed. However, a short amount of time spent with my guide-clamp, honing stones and leather strop, and this knife is now as sharp as anything I own, regardless of where it was manufactured. It is seriously, impressively sharp now.
4. Edge retention: Honestly, at this point I don't know, I just recently purchased it. From the (very, very little) amount of material that came off the blade during sharpening, I'd say it's going to stay sharp as long as you don't intend to misuse it. After all, it's a pocket knife, not a chainsaw.
5. Operation: 10 out of 10. The knife opens solidly with a reassuring snap and the liner lock secures it firmly. I'm sure it will not open accidentally in your pocket...it takes a firm nudge on the blade's 'flipper' to open it. Since I don't 'clip' the knife inside my pocket with the pocket clip, I can't gripe about it. And, since I'm a lefty it gives me a thumb rest when I open the knife. I kind of like that! There are no sharp edges or contours to 'gouge' you as the knife rides in your pocket.
To sum it up, considering the fact I had to sharpen mine, I'll rate it as a 9 out of 10. Otherwise, it's perfect. It's good enough to give as a gift, and definitely good enough to be a keeper. It's a terrific little knife.
