Mammootty has been acting since 1979 and has appeared in more than 350 films. Here are 11 movies from the Malayalam Megastar's filmography that can't be missed.
Movie: New Delhi | Year: 1987 | Synopsis: Mammootty plays a journalist who lands up in a mental asylum and prison when he attempts to report a rape by two politicians. This film was the actor's comeback after a number of box office failures.
Movie: Thaniyavarthanam | Year: 1987 | Synopsis: A neighbourhood thinks that mental illness is hereditary in Balan Mash's (Mammootty) family. After his uncle dies, the people note Balan's every move, assuming the mental illness has been passed on to him.
Movie: Oru CBI Diary Kurippu | Year: 1988 | Synopsis: Mammooty plays a CBI officer Sethurama Iyer. The movie is based on a real life case called the Polakkulam Case, where a hotel employee was murdered and the body was dropped from the terrace to make it look like a suicide.
Movie: Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha | Year: 1989 | Synopsis: The film is based on the Chekavar warriors, who are martial artists well-versed who take part in fatal duels to solves disputes among people and kings. Mammootty won a National Film Award for his performance in this movie.
Movie: Mathilukal | Year: 1990 | Synopsis: In this film, Mammootty is writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. The story is based on a book with the same title, writer's experience when he falls in love with a female inmate from the neighbouring prison.
Movie: Vidheyan | Year: 1993 | Synopsis: The movie is about a slave who is freed when his brutal landlord (played by Mammootty) is killed.
Movie: Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar | Year: 2000 | Synopsis: As the title suggests, this is an English biopic of Ambedkar. While director Jabbar Patel was considering many actors around the world for the role, including Robert DeNiro, he later realised that Mammootty looked very similar to Ambedkar without his moustache. The actor was reluctant to lose his moustache at the time.
Movie: Kaazhcha | Year: 2004 | Synopsis: After the Gujarat earthquake, a boy ends up alone in Kerala. A village man (played by Mammootty) is desperate to adopt the boy, but faces legal issues. The film is known for the interweaving of comedy and sentiment into the plot.
Movie: Big B | Year: 2007 | Synopsis: Short for Big Brother, Big B is about how a gangster and his three brothers investigate their mother's murder. This film is the remake of the American film 'Four Brothers'.
Movie: Paleri Manikyam | Year: 2009 | Synopsis: This movie is based on the first recorded murder in Kerala in the 1950s. Mammootty plays a detective who is investigating this case 52 years later.
Movie: Pathemari | Year: 2015 | Synopsis: The film is set in 1960s when many Keralites moved to the Gulf. Mammootty plays Narayanan, who stays alone in the Gulf to earn for his family's happiness.
