Leftists use the environment as an excuse to criticise free-markets, while those on the right believe that we should exploit the environment untill we are 100% sure we are heading for disaster. Both are wrong. This an issue beyond the blinkered political perspectives that many are unable to transcend.
We are not very good at long-term planning. We think two or three meals ahead, and on a good day even as far as two or three decades ahead; but we do not yet clearly think two or three generations ahead as a rule, and when we do, we tend to do so only in the same self-interested sense in which we think about the next meal.
Well about 2 of the 40 known species of seal of the Holocene are known to have become extinct.
That's 5%. Not 86% !
Several species of whale have become distressingly rare. How many, extinct ?
One of the three species of sirenian has become extinct.
And maybe one of the 35 odd species of dolphin.
So yeah, countless species of marine mammals driven to extinction by humans ? Care to name a few more ?
How many north American mammal species have become extinct ? I can think of a few birds. The heath hen. The passenger pigeon. The Carolina parakeet ?
Off the top of my head, I can't recall a single mammal species. Maybe there were a few rare rats in north America that became extinct 300 years ago, and nobody even noticed. Or maybe not.
Yet another problem with no workable solution. We're coming to or are at the precipice on dozens of issues like this. Sure am glad we have a system that ensures only the most intelligent, well-informed and wisest people get elected to lead us through them.........
I think that is called evolution and natural selection - the strongest survive.
Not really. Our survival is not threatened; most of our consumption is geared not toward survival, but to seek amusement and a more comfortable life. We know that diversity is good. If we were to appoint ourselves the keepers of the Earth, then we could aim to reduce our population and keep 50% of the Earth as wilderness.
Wow, it is amazing to me that people would actually be offend by this article about a scientific based study..Poor humanity that we should have to reflect for a moment on how we are consuming and effecting the rest of this living planet. And without advocating for a vegetarian diet, heaven forbid someone should have to do without their morning bacon or afternoon McDonalds.
Once crows developed a language and teach their young about the evils of the hairless mammals things will get much worse. For now human will just kill each other over silly things like money, gods, and skin color. The future will be full of robots and crows. Go Humanity!
what i mean by that is that we all contribute to these destructive and negligent industries by financing them when we purchase their products. if, for example, you eat animal products then you are clearly contributing to this disaster. a solution is to disassociate yourself from these industries by choosing something different to eat by becoming that much dreaded, much ridiculed and feared thing, vegan. it isn't perfect, but it is much kinder to the planet, to non human animals and to ourselves to live as a vegan as opposed to any other lifestyle.
well the other guy was claiming 83% of species, and you are claiming 83% of the number of animals.
Not the same thing.
Apart from a few marquee names, like lions and tigers, the vast majority of mammal species are some kind of rat. To claim that 83% of mammal species have been made extinct by humans is ridiculous.
Even in Australia, where the rats had no avoidance of cats, before the cats arrived, the percentage of rats made extinct is a lot less than 83%. And the rest of the world had cats for several million years before humans.
So! What is the conclusion? Human Beings should commit mass suicide and leave the Earth to the Microbes and Insects? It’s amazing how so many Humans hate their own Spicies!
No much for them to eat, in the middle of the sea.
All of the animals in the sea eat plankton, or smaller animals that eat plankton, which only grows where there is light, which is only within x metres of the surface.
Why would they mean other people? Humanity is a cancer: our insatiable hunger for resources makes us spread and destroy our surroundings, until it comes a time when we destroy our host, killing ourselves in the process. Why keep on living? Because that's what cancer does, it doesn't have the mechanism to destroy itself. Our only hope is to develop such mechanism or have it forced upon us. However, we are humans, so hopefully it could happen psychologically, with no need for genocide. Our lives, our choice.
It does seem as though somebody in Fuckwit Central is worried about the message this article is sending out. But glad to see they've put Morons for Hire on the case so I've no doubt they will put us all right on the facts!
Those words were written when the human population was 10% of what it is now. Mission accomplished. We are driving the world's ecosystem to collapse, we will not outlast it.
You're not in Kansas anymore Dorothy, it's called the real world. You can't click your heals together and magically make all the extinct animals come back.
A agree. Starting out with numbers we cannot possibly count is a nothing burger. Are the including microbes, bug by population, viruses, pet rocks? But, like you said, it matters not. It's a slight of word magicians trick to impress but has no meaning. The author(s) are thin-minded, unintellectually creative but not smart nor are they circumspect.
Meanwhile, back in Washington, Republican members of the House of Representatives and US Senate released a joint statement regarding the study "Drill baby, drill!" As they collectively rolled their eyes.
Humans just 0.01% of all life but have destroyed 83% of wild mammals – study

If we can ever get the right to be involved in science you might be able to put down the soda straw that you view the world through.
Sadly at this point in time no self respecting researcher is interested in being part of the right wing Flat Earth Society.
Human nature I suppose. When the food runs out.....some minds may change.
eat lions and dolphins instead.

The point it's making is that the majority of the birds on the planet, 70% are a species that we've bred to consume.
The point I would be making, is that statistic is probably FAKE .
Dull trolling.

I'm betting you see yourself as among the 1-2 billion.
There are 10 people for every pigeon in the UK. Does that seem correct?

Heard of Midas?
These articles always stimulate dullards to make baseless assertions based purely upon political paranoia and scientific ignorance.

WHAT reasons? Liberal paranoia?
Ugh...stories like this are always CHOCK FULL of Leftist propaganda. In a month there will be three articles about how they faked the data.
The more land there is used to feed humans and livestock, the less land there is to feed wild populations.
(And yes, if you like they don't eat land. but they do depend on plants that grow on that land)

Calm down dear.... you've not taken your tablets again have you, you naughty boy!
There are ten times as many wild deer in the eastern United States now, than there were 100 years ago.
You seem to be forget humans are natural. That's like the ocean blaming itself for taking up land where "trees could be growing"
Is it based on biomass, rather than numbers?

wow, these comments are another confirmation that humans will last another 100-200 yrs at most
Trump in name and deed...
The 'American Dream' has become the world disaster..

Humans kick ass again! Oh Yeah!
No much for them to eat, in the middle of the sea.
All of the animals in the sea eat plankton, or smaller animals that eat plankton, which only grows where there is light, which is only within x metres of the surface.
It seems to have touched a nerve.
Thanks for that Dotty. I was starting to worry.
This is true and why I kill as many other living things as possible.
We need to kill while we can!
OH NOES ! ! ! ! MANKIND IS HORRIBLE OMG ! !! ! ! ! LETS ALL KILL OURSELVES OR BE VEGANS OR ELSE!!!!
Complete bullocks

It is a know fact that we do not burn fossil fuels. It has been discovered:
1. that the oil companies started this false idea as propaganda.
2. the Earth produces crude oil without plant life as a basis.
Theres never a good reason to be a vegan

How many rats and mice are there ?
Those figures don't look credible at all.

No there is not a human population problem. There is a human behaviour problem.
We have a paradigm problem. Neoliberalism as a turbo-charged market economy is not the answer but the problem.
