Indie Stream: Four Years Later, Sci-Fi Mindbender 'Mr. Nobody' Gets a Release (Video)

The growing cult film starring Jared Leto, Sarah Polley and Diane Kruger finally gets its US premiere, while "Muscle Shoals" rocks theaters and VOD.

Back in 2009 -- yes 2009 -- when Mr. Nobody premiered at the Venice Film Festival, The Hollywood Reporter wrote: “What is the nature of time? Not the best subject for a popular feature film, one might think, until Mr. Nobody came along to prove the contrary. Like a thinking man's Benjamin Button, it addresses very complex concepts, like the infinite number of possibilities that human life presents, in an entertaining way, following the hero Nemo Nobody, age 0 to 118, through the different lives he would have led had he made different choices."

FILM REVIEW: Mr. Nobody

"This big-budget English-language co-production shows that Europeans can compete in the sci-fi realm where high production values are king. Given the film's versatile appeal as love story and fantasy, but relatively minor star power (Jared Leto, Sarah Polley and Diane Kruger are the top names), its commercial outlook looks strong but not overwhelming.”

It’s odd that an English language sci-fi pic, with a $40 million budget, name cast, and critical buzz (THR wasn’t the only one intrigued at Venice) has taken four years to find its way to a US audience, but Magnolia Pictures is hoping the wait has sci-fi fans itching to stream.

Mr. Nobody has already earned a bit of cult movie status, thanks to DVD imports readily available on eBay and film blogs discussing Nobody’s unique narrative structure, philosophical underpinnings, and beautiful cinematography.  Just as one example, Film School Rejects recently wrote, “Whatever the reason is for the delay, it’s a shame because Mr. Nobody, by far and away, is the best film of 2013.  I say 2013 because the damn thing is finally coming out this year.”

STORY: Magnolia Pictures Nabs U.S. Rights to Hot Rock Doc 'Muscle Shoals'

Also out this week from Magnolia is Muscle Shoals, which THR praised as “the next must-see music doc."  Loaded with interviews from music legends ranging from Aretha Franklin to Mick Jagger, this festival favorite tells the story of FAME Studios and how a small Alabama town became a music mecca.

Muscle Shoals premieres online and at the IFC theater in New York tomorrow night.

Mr. Nobody is available to download today and will be hitting select theaters on Nov. 1.
