Nintendo knows exactly what it does well. Innovative technology combined with charming gameplay has always been at the heart of the company's philosophy. It's been an extraordinarily successful combination - and one which was once again on display at this year's Gamescom, as I discovered when playing Super Mario Party's new two-tablet mode, Toad's Rec Room.

It's no secret H1Z1 hasn't had the easiest of rides. Despite being one of the first games to develop a battle royale mode, H1Z1's PC version suffered a huge dip in player numbers when competitors such as PUBG and Fortnite emerged. Meanwhile, the H1Z1 community has often complained about the lack of regular updates, and the game's current review score isn't looking particularly peachy.

FeatureValve's forgotten game: Team Fortress 2's shocking toxicity problem

For some who have suffered harassment and sexual abuse, enough is enough.

Despite being released over 10 years ago, Team Fortress 2 still boasts one of the biggest player bases on Steam. Today, the number of players peaked at 54,350 - placing the game at seventh on Steam's leaderboard of most-played games. And behind the player count, there is still a significant esports community organised by a series of leagues unaffiliated with Valve. TF2 players have run a small but passionate competitive community for several years.

True to its name, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege is currently the sixth most-played game on Steam. But those numbers could soon be pumped up, as the game is having another free weekend to attract new players.

Cuphead sells over 3m copies

It's a knockout!

It's been nearly a year since Cuphead's release, and in that time lots of people have found the game to be just their cup of tea. Three million people, in fact.

PUBG announces major bug-fixing campaign

"It's time to fix PUBG."

If you've stumbled onto any of the PUBG Reddit forums since its release, you'll know it's pretty much impossible to go less than ten seconds before stumbling across the phrase "fix PUBG". The game's name has almost become synonymous with bugs and janky gameplay. Developer PUBG Corp has recently promised major improvements to the game, and it seems this time it's really serious about it, as the company has set up a website specifically to allow players to track bug-fixing progress.

Only a few days after Epic announced Fortnite would avoid the Google Play store, Bethesda has joined the list of developers choosing to release its games exclusively on its own digital distribution platform.

Niantic targets Pokémon Go PvP by end of 2018

Prepare for trouble - make it double.

One of the key differences between Pokémon Go and other Pokémon titles is PvP battling isn't a feature of the mobile game. Yet this may soon change, as Niantic has hinted a PvP mode will come to Pokémon Go later this year.

Octopath Traveler has already exceeded expectations by selling out in Japan only a day after its release, but it seems this success also extends globally, as today Nintendo announced the game has shipped 1m copies worldwide.

Over the past few weeks, PUBG players have accused developer PUBG Corp of being more focused on adding new content than fixing bugs in the game. The noise grew so loud that when Update #17 was released, PUBG Corp addressed the issue directly in its update notes, promising bug fixes would come in the future. And to be fair to PUBG Corp, it seems the developer has kept its word, for PC update #19 includes a wave of technical adjustments to solve some of the game's jankier moments.

If you wanted to feel old today, think on this: Morrowind was originally released in 2002, making the game 16 years old. And for almost as long, modders have been adding their own creative touches to the game, including those working on "Tamriel Rebuilt". It's an ongoing project by fans trying to faithfully reconstruct the parts of Morrowind's landmass which Bethesda did not have time to make. Now, after many years of work, the modders have released their latest build, called Old Ebonheart, which adds brand new areas and questlines to the already-extensive mod.
