Kenya claim historic 8th African Nations crown in style

Nairobi. Kenya, September 19, 2013- African powerhouses and host Kenya added a new title to their cupboard of achievements after their straight sets win (25-17, 25-20, 25-23) against Tunisia in the fifth and final day of the 2013 Women's African nations Championship held at Kasarani Moi International Sports Center in Nairobi, Kenya on Thursday.
With the win, the African queens improved their continental record to 8 titles in 16 editions with 5 crowns more than the Egypt and Tunisia (3 crowns each).
At the end of the competition Kenya led the 6 nation tournament with the full record 5-0 (15 points), followed by Cameroon who secured the silver medal after the beat Algeria 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-23) to finish with 4-1 record (10 points).
Tunisia gained the bronze medal with win- loss ratio of 3-2 (9 points), while Senegal concluded in the fourth position with 2-3 (5 points), Egypt fifth 1-4 (4 points) and finally Algeria at the six and last place with 0-5 (2 points).
After the end of final match CAVB first Vice president Mory Keita presented the gold medals and the cup for Kenyan team, the silver for Cameroon and the bronze for Tunisia accompanied with CAVB Vice president KVF president Waithaka Kioni, Referee Delagte Jouad Berrada, Medical delegate Hossam Bahgat and SOC delegate Charles Nyaberi.
Cameroon v Algeria 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-23)
Cameroon picked up their tournaments fourth victory over Algeria 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-23) in the tournament's last day.
Cameroon concluded their win- loss ratio of the while competition to 4-1 with 10 points, while Algeria came in the last position with 0-5 ratio.
Nana Tchoudjang was the best scorer from Cameroon side with 16 points followed by captain Mballa Eba'a 11 points. From Algerian side middle blocker Mouni Abderrahim marked 11 points as best scorer for her side.
Cameroon started the match with their full power as they deployed their well known block through captain Mbala Eba'a and Yomkil Ngo and succeeded to penetrate the Algerian block easily using also their unstable backline defence. Cameroon went easily to win the first set 25-14. Algeria came back from the second set using their spike service as they succeeded to lead throughout set until Cameroon won the crucial points of the set to win narrowly 26-24. Algeria stayed near also in the third set but Cameroon players were insisting to win the match in straight sets.
Senegal v Egypt 3-2 (25-20, 14-25, 21-25, 28-26, 15-12)
Senegal rebounded from a set behind to capture a Marathon victory over Egypt in epic tiebreaker 3-2 (25-20, 14-25, 21-25, 28-26, 15-12) in 134 minutes of thrilling action.
Senegal now finished the competition at the fourth position with a win- loss ratio of 2-3, while Egypt concluded in the fifth place with 1-4 record.
The astonishing performance of the Senegalese middle blocker Binetou Sow was the key factor of the victory as she scored 29 points including 5 killing blocks making over the best scoring performance in the whole competition. Egypt's center Fraida Alaskalany was the best scorer from er side with 18 points including 6 stuff blocks.
Senegal dominated the first set as they arranged their taller blockers against Egyptian spikers. Egypt players committed a lot of reception and digging mistakes as Senegal used this to win the first set 25-20. Egypt recovered in the second set specially through the wing spikers who sent their sharp hits from position 2 and 4 to win the set widely 25-14.
Again Senegal started to use the middle blocker in the quick attacks specially the competition tallest player Sokhna Gueye. With a lot of injured players, Egypt coach played with outside hitter Mai Moustafa as opposite spiker where she did well with Sarah Hanafy to win the third set 25-21. Again Egypt struggled to win the fourth set but Senegal team was there with the attacks of Sall Diagne and Adama Diallo to win the longest set 28-26 and extend the match to tiebreak.
Senegal were more psychologically atble in the tiebreak when they came from 4-8 at the court turn to win the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.
Kenya v Tunisia 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-23)
Kenya put all their power from the start of the match through the different combinations led by the competition best setter Jane Wacu who helped the strong attacker Everlyn Makuto and Mercy Moim. Kenya led widely throughout the set to win 25-17.
Although Tunisia improved widely in the second set after the injury of veteran Kenyan middle blocker Brackcides Khadambi, where the Kenyan defence was obviously affected. Later Kenya team came back through improving their block using the efficient center Ruth Jepngetich to win the set 25-20.
Tunisia played their best in the third set and made the widest point defcit to theri side when they led 19-13 before the Kenyan team fought aggressively against their excited spectators to decrease the point difference gradually till they won 25-23 with fantastic volleyball display.
