Hunter Morris is in the midst of his first season on Samford’s staff as a volunteer assistant coach. A native of Huntsville, Ala., he graduated from Grissom High School in 2007 and was selected in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Boston Red Sox, but chose to attend Auburn University.

Morris played at Auburn University from 2008-10 and was named 2008 Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year and 2010 SEC Player of the Year prior to being selected in the fourth round by the Milwaukee Brewers. He spent the 2010-14 seasons with Milwaukee before being traded to and finishing his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2015.

During the 2017 spring season, Morris worked as a student assistant coach at Auburn University, while returning to finish his degree. He and his wife, Macie, have a son, Tripp (6), as well as a daughter, Charlotte (1).

“I have known Hunter and followed his career for a long time now,” said Samford head coach Casey Dunn. “Being able to add him to our staff is exciting. I can’t wait to see the impact he will be able to make on our hitters. Hunter brings with him a wealth of knowledge from his playing days, but also from his time spent coaching at Auburn last season. His responsibilities will include assisting our hitters, coaching first base and working with our first basemen and outfielders.”
