Guardians of Religion shells Russian monitoring outpost, Eastern Idlib

On Monday, local activists reported that the Guardians of Religion faction belonging to the al-Qaeda shelled a Russian monitoring outpost near the town of Abu al-Duhur town, Eastern Idlib, Northern Syria. The Guardians of Religion faction shelled the Russian outpost two days after the faction rejected the Russian-Turkish agreement on Idlib.

The activists added that the Guardians of Religion faction launched 130 mm towed field gun artillery missiles on the Russian monitoring outpost stationed in the village of al-Bragheti in Northern Abu al-Duhur. No casualties were reported.

The activists noted that the Guardians of Religion brought artillery, launched the missiles, and withdrew the artillery. The Syrian government forces stationed in Abu al-Duhur responded by shelling agricultural lands in the villages of al-Bulisa, Kowairis, Towail al-Haleeb, and al-Sheikh Idris in Eastern Idlib.

The Guardians of Religion faction rejected the Russian-Turkish agreement on Idlib and called to launch military operations in the governorate. The agreement states establishing a demilitarized zone that is void of terrorist groups and heavy weapons.

The Guardians of Religion faction is an armed insurgent group affiliated with Al-Qaeda, active in the Syrian Civil War. The head of the group, Abu Humam al-Shami, was formerly a member of both Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham and the al-Nusra Front.
