The Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player award is given out each and every Super Bowl after all the confetti drops, the Lombardi trophy is presented to the winning team, and the head coach, owner, and a couple players talk.

We know who votes for the Pro Bowl, we know who votes for the All-Pro team, but who votes for the Super Bowl MVP?

It seems to be the winning team’s Quarterback that usually wins regardless of who the most valuable player actually was. This season Seattle Seahawk’s LB Malcolm Smith won the award. The same Malcolm Smith that intercepted the Richard Sherman deflected pass to seal the win in the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. Which then entered that Michael Crabtree vs Richard Sherman saga, kicked off with a push to Sherman’s grill, and a hyped interview with Erin Andrews. Smith is the 9th defensive player to win the award I Super Bowl history, talk about a select group of players.

The award has been voted on all but recently by a select panel of 16 football writers and broadcasters. As of 2001, in Super Bowl XXXV, the fans have had a say, and vote online or by phone. The writers are weighted the heaviest in the voting process, with 80% of the vote. The 20% fan vote really seems to be nothing more than a tie breaker. There more fan vote the more diluted that 20% becomes, but fan interaction has become a huge part of television watching, and keep people engaged longer.

So fans, you really will have better luck on winning a prop bet than influencing that Super Bowl MVP.
