The Liberty Incident Revealed is the complete and final story about the Israeli Air Force and Navy attack on the USS Liberty during the Six Day War in June 1967. Cutting through all of the controversy and conspiracy theories about Israel's deadly attack, Cristol revises his well-regarded book about the event with an expanded and in-depth analysis of all of the sources, including the released tapes of the National Security Agency (NSA) intercepts.

When Cristol's first book on the subject, The Liberty Incident, was published in 2002, there remained many unanswered questions about Israeli Air Force audio tapes. The NSA intercepts tapes had not yet been released in 2002. Some conspiracy theorists alleged the NSA tapes would prove that the Israeli attack was premeditated. Cristol's successful Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the NSA, while resulting in the release of those tapes, has been greeted by anti-Israel sources insisting that the NSA tapes are fraudulent and are part of a larger conspiracy to deceive the American public.

After a quarter of a century of intensive research in both Israel and the U.S., researching all relevant archives from NSA, CIA and the State Department, reviewing both formerly classified and open source documents, and interviewing all then-living individuals directly involved in the incident, the factual and documentary record is clear. Cristol maintains that despite the fact that all of the official records and transcripts are now available for review, the truth has proven to be of no interest to those individuals and organizations who are motivated by hidden agendas, wish to keep conspiracy theories alive, or are trying to feed sensational stories to the media. Documenting his findings in six new chapters, Cristol establishes definitively that the Israeli attack was a tragic mistake and presents a convincing argument that will be regarded as the final chapter in the long-simmering debate about this incident.

About the Author

Capt. A Jay Cristol, USN (Ret.) JD, PhD, entered the U.S. Navy as an aviation cadet in November 1951. As a naval aviator, he flew day and night from the aircraft carrier Princeton during the Korean conflict. Upon return to civilian life, he joined the Naval Air Reserve where, during the 1960s, he flew volunteer missions to Vietnam. He wears the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal among his more than a dozen military decorations. After eighteen years as a naval aviator, he became a Navy lawyer for another twenty years. In civilian life, he concurrently practiced civil law for twenty-five years. He currently serves as a federal judge and teaches law as an adjunct professor at the University of Miami. Cristol was named a Legal Legend by the Historical Society of South Florida in 2011.

OPERATION CYANIDE is an outrageously toxic code name for ANY operation, but it lived up to its lethal promise even in its failure. It was a failed attempt at a false-flag operation, in which LBJ attempted to sink the USS Liberty with Zionist aid, for US-Israeli alliance domination of the whole Middle East. Since the ship failed to sink, and since a USSR ship was watching the whole thing, the intent failed and US personnel were needlessly and brutally sacrificed. They failed to blame it on the Egyptians or some Arab nation, so the U.S. could attack Egypt with Israel. Once upon a time I subscribed to the US Naval Institute Proceedings. I also bought their books, believing they wouldn't publish garbage. A recent peek at the Proceedings convinced me that journal has gone to the dogs. That they would put their name on this crap is another indictment. Never again will I give them so much as a dime in either a subscription or a book purchase.

This book isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. It’s just a continuation of the cover-up and propaganda of this horrible incident. This incident was not a mistake – just talk to any of the survivors like I have. If you’re interested in the facts, a much better read is Joan Mellen’s, Blood in the Water

Many dramatic military "incidents" such as the sinking of the USS Maine, the Battle of Little Big Horn, and Pearl Harbor have been subject to continuing intensive research. As a result, we know more about these incidents than did the participants of those times. The future should see even more definitive books on those subjects. The Liberty Incident Revealed is one of several I have read on the subject. Despite A. Jay Cristol's claim of extensive research, he fails in accuracy and objectivity. A competent researcher with no bias and with access to the information amassed by Cristol, James Scott, and many others could now write much better on the subject.

Cristol is persuasive in presenting his view by elaborating on flimsy logic and ignoring contrary information. Cristol's deductions and calculations should be carefully analyzed for bias and blatant errors. The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth is a fantasy both in the courtroom and in this book. This Naval reserve aviator's expertise on ships of the Liberty class seems slight to us who have served on them. He could have learned much by talking to the crewmen and other participants in the tragedy.

I believe the tragedy may well have been the result of many mistakes by many of those involved, not a poorly executed plot by national leaders. However, I resist basing this opinion on any book so obviously one-sided. The book may be valuable to scholars for the prime information (if unaltered) and citations. Others should read better books first.

Israel is not America's ally

Watch the recent Al Jazeera documentary "The Day Israel Attacked America." Google "New tapes show Israel's attack on USS Liberty was deliberate" (Digital Journal).

"Admiral and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Thomas Moorer, as recently as 2007, penned an article for Stars and Stripes repeating that the results of his own investigation led him to conclude that the attack on the Liberty was deliberate, and an effort by Israel to blame the sinking of the ship on Egypt, in order to draw the US into war against Egypt. Israel was fighting the Six Day War...According to James Bamford as reported in his book, "Body of Secrets: Anatomy of the Ultra-Secret National Security Agency," LBJ was not enraged because the Liberty had been attacked, but because it did not sink, causing an embarrassment for his ally Israel, and depriving him of an excuse to bomb Cairo."

The motive is pretty clear. Israel (and some allies in the US, probably including LBJ and CIA counterintelligence chief James Angleton) wanted to draw the US into the war to attack Egypt, occupy Cairo, remove Nasser from power and retake the Suez Canal. If the Liberty had sunk with no survivors, "evidence" would have been produced to blame Egypt, and the world would probably have believed it.
