Chapter 1. Introduction

This chapter introduces SGIconsole. The sections in this chapter include:

What Is SGIconsole

SGIconsole 2.1 is a suite of software that allows you to manage multiple SGI servers running the IRIX or Linux operating system. These servers include SGI servers, SGI partitioned systems and large, single-system-image servers, including legacy SGI servers and Silicon Graphics graphical systems. SGIconsole can also provide console services for non SGI servers.

SGIconsole consists of software suite including the Console Manager package and Performance Co-Pilot, which provides access to common remote management tools for hardware and software. It is intended to replace the SGI IRISconsole product.

SGIconsole 2.1 assumes your SGIconsole machine and your remote display for viewing and running SGIconsole applications are behind a secure firewall. SGIconsole 2.1 uses standard Linux security features. For information on how to improve security when using SGIconsole, see the “ Console Manager Server Security in Secure Mode” section in the Console Manager for SGIconsole Administrator's Guide.

Note: SGIconsole supports remote-displaying. For a list of supported SGIconsole clients and displays, see the SGIconsole release notes.

Why Use SGIconsole

SGIconsole provides a central server control environment that has the following features:

  • Support for SGI clusters, partitioned systems, and large single-system-image servers

  • Easily expanded to support additional servers

  • Software applications and tools for installation and configuration, console functionality, and for monitoring and managing system-level performance

  • Web-based user interface

SGIconsole can manage SGI Altix and SGI Origin servers better than any other console server product. SGIconsole can communicate with L1, L2, module System Controller (MSC), and rackmount system multimodule System Controller (MMSC) system controllers and provide reset/nonmaskable interrupt (NMI)/power up/power down functionality for SGI servers. SGI console can also provide console functionality for non SGI servers. For more information on SGI controller software, see “System Controller Software” in Chapter 2.

A single SGIconsole can support up to 64 servers. SGIconsole GUI is Java-based and can be run from Windows, Linux, or IRIX clients.

Software and Hardware Requirements

The SGIconsole 2.1 release requires that you update to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 3.0 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS 3.0 release. The Red Hat 8 and Red Hat 9 releases are not supported on SGIconsole 2.1.

The hardware requirements for the SGIconsole 2.1 release are the same as for the SGIconsole 2.0 release. For information on SGIconsole hardware requirements, see the SGIconsole Hardware Connectivity Guide.
