Professor Dana Arnold

Professor of Architectural History and Theory

Dana Arnold is the Director of the Centre for Ideas (CfI).

My research focuses on architecture as visual culture and how aesthetic ideas are exchanged. This work has taken on a global dimension with research projects on the architectural dialogues between London and Paris, and those between Britain and China, and Europe and the Middle East.

My British Academy funded research project Ambivalent Geographies in collaboration with the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, provides a forum for interchange on questions of urbanism and architecture as visual culture between from scholars across the Middle East, including Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Israel. I also work bilingually with French colleagues on two international research projects on cities: London-Paris which also includes partners from New York University and the University of Oslo and is nearing completion; and The British and French Concessions in Tianjin with colleagues at the Université Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne and the Architecture School at Tianjin University, China. I am also the premier external advisor for a research project: The cultural landscape and public space from a transnational perspective: Studies on urban parks in treaty ports of modern China award from Natural Science Foundation of China (Award No. 51108307, 2012-2014) held by Dr Tianjie Zhang at Tianjin University.

As a result of these collaborations I have been appointed Guest Professor, International Research Centre for Chinese Cultural Heritage Conservation, Tianjin University, China and Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Architecture at the Middle East Technical University, Ankara. I have been awarded a Fellowship at CRASSH, University of Cambridge to pursue my research on the theme ‘Ambivalent Geographies’ in 2013.

This work has been the subject of several recent keynote addresses including :

  • ? / ??·?????(Professor Dana Arnold),????——????????? (Architectural History is more than the study of buildings), 4th International Symposium on the Teaching of Architectural History, China
Published in Urban Environment Design (Beijing) Special Issue Feb 2012 ‘World Architectural History International Teaching and Research’ pp 92-100
  • Displacing the East/West Binary: Aesthetic and Cultural Crossover in Film and Visual Culture
Symposium at Cardiff University on 2 November 2012

My writings on how architecture, space and cities combine include a number of monographs:

  • The Spaces of the Hospital, London, Routledge 2013
  • Rural Urbanism: London landscapes in the early nineteenth century, Manchester, MUP 2006
  • Re-presenting the Metropolis: Architecture, Urban Experience and Social Life in London 1800-1840, Basingstoke, Ashgate 2000

I am currently completing a book on Architectural Aesthetics: Interpreting Classical Antiquity in the 18th Century to be published by IB Tauris.

My interest in how we frame our discussion of the visual arts in a global context is manifest in my forthcoming book for TATE publishing: Art an Introduction. This follows on from my historiographic study Art History: A Very Short Introduction, Oxford, OUP 2004 which has sold over 40,000 copies and is has been/is being translated into many languages including Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish.

I am a Member of a number of Editorial Boards and Advisory Committees including the Steering Group for AHRC/EPSRC joint initiative Science and Heritage and the AHRC Peer Review College. I edit three book series published by Wiley Blackwell: New Interventions in Art History; Companions to Art History and Anthologies in Art History.
