Conservation

The Cathedral Conservator is in charge of the conservation of the Cathedral's object collections, through assessing the condition and storage needs of the collection and performing remedial conservation and cleaning of objects when necessary.

Many items are still actively used in the religious life of the Cathedral while others kept in storage have retired from their original usage. Whatever their material, whether metalwork, stone, paper or textiles all of the collections require appropriate care and attention to ensure their long term use and enjoyment. Ongoing Integrated Pest Management (IPM), environmental monitoring and condition assessments for the overall Conservation Management Plan is an integral part of everyday life at the Cathedral.

• Seven designs for mosaics by William Blake Richmond
• Five watercolours, architectural and decorative designs by F.C. Penrose
• A wooden spandrel model with paper and painted surface by Alfred Stevens
• Rebuilding a wooden model section of the cathedral based on a puzzle construction by Sir Mervyn Edmund Macartney

The cathedral is also engaged in a joint project with conservation students at City and Guilds College of Art concerning the treatment of archaeological stones.
