Inscription:  (Lower part of back proper left leg:) Greaves '91 signed Description:  A mythical griffin with both back legs in a semi-crouched position, not quite sitting. Its proper right front leg is extended outward with its paw making a stopping gesture. Both wings are outstretched and pointing back. Both ears are up, mouth is open and tongue is extended. The tail is curled back. The griffin is part of a larger fountain setting designed to illustrate c story about a legendary Scioto Valley Indian child Pickaweekee, who learns the art of myth-making. The griffin is one of six animal sculptures created by Greaves to form part of the Children's Fountain, also called the Pickaweekee Children's Fountain. The surrounding sculptures, fountain and park site were erected at a cost of $750,000 to $1,000,000 to commemorate the Quincentennial Celebration of Columbus' voyage to the Americas and the 100th anniversary of the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio (which represents 1,110 architectural, engineering and construction companies). The idea for the work originated with the KidSpeak Advisory Committee, the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio and the Columbus Recreation & Parks Department. Greaves' design was chosen through a competition sponsored by the Greater Columbus Arts Council. Among those providing funding, the Builders Exchange ($225,000), the Scioto Superfest Association ($5,000), volunteer groups of Childrens' Hospital, and the children of Columbus who sponsored walk-a-thons and plaque sales.
