TITANIC ACTRESS GLORIA STUART TO GIVE PRINTING EQUIPMENT TO MILLS COLLEGE

Oakland, CA - Oscar-nominated actress Gloria Stuart, who played Old Rose in the 1997 movie Titanic, is planning to give Mills College important printing equipment and materials including a rare typeface from her private studio in Los Angeles. A printer and book artist with art in major collections worldwide, the 95 year-old Stuart intends to donate a Vandercook Press, a rare run of Eve typeface, and archive materials as a bequest to Mills’ Book Arts program.

A celebration of Stuart’s work will be held at Mills on Sunday, April 9, 2006 at 1 pm. Free and open to the public, the event will take place in the Heller Room of the campus’ F.W. Olin Library. Stuart will give an informal illustrated talk about her handmade books in conjunction with an exhibition of her work in the Library. This event is co-sponsored by Mills’ Center for the Book and the Book Arts Program.

Stuart has appeared in television, stage, and dozens of film roles since the 1930s, including The Invisible Man, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and My Favorite Year.
