IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Brazil 3-1 Ivory Coast

By Sam Lyon
  1. 17:30 Commentary

Brazil v Ivory Coast. It just smacks of World Cup gold doesn't it?

  2. 17:34 Commentary

If, like me, this was one of those matches that caught your eye as soon as you checked out your World Cup fixture wallchart, you'll be more excited than a six-year-old at Christmas right now. And I don't blame you one bit. The Samba Stars v the Elephants, South America v Africa, the World Cup masters v the relative newcomers. I'm banking on this being a right royal cracker. Excited?

  3. 17:37 Commentary

I'm Sam Lyon and I'll be bringing you all the news and action from Soccer City in Johannesburg as Brazil and Ivory Coast play out what I guarantee will be a barnstormer. I'd rather not do it all on my own, though, so take this chance to get your missives flying in to me. Tweet me @sampatricklyon, text me on 81111 (UK) and +44 7786200666 (worldwide) or continue the chat over on 606. Have it.

  4. 17:43 Commentary

Now then, just where do we start? There are more talking points coming out of South Africa right now than you could shake a Vuvuzela at, and any fears early on that this tournament was going to be dull have been well and truly blown out of the water. At this very moment, the French are sulking, the Italians are scratching their heads, the English are meeting and Pavlos Joseph is still looking for the toilet (possibly). Drama drama drama.

  5. Contributor BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson at Soccer City

"This stadium is a sight to behold in the day but at night, lit up, it is truly mesmerising. Brazilians and Ivorians in equal measure flood the walkways and bridges outside, dreaming of glory. And what's that sound? It's the beat of the samba drum, not the call of the vuvuzela. This tournament is moving on apace."

  6. 606

From Alexandereski: "I wonder how much motivation the Ivory Coast team will get from results like the NZ/Italy game today. It's like an advertisement for 'anything's possible'..."

  7. Contributor BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty

On Twitter: "France have brought some real colour and controversy to this World Cup. Without actually playing any football. Quite a trick."

  8. 17:52 Commentary

But, like I say, I'm banking on Brazil-Ivory Coast to get us back talking about matters ON the field again by 10pm BST tonight. Brazil may not be the fluent attacking force of days gone by, but they remain a side packed full of talent - and the Ivory Coast, with a new responsibility instilled in them by Sven-Goran Eriksson, are more than capable of providing an upset. Predictions?

  9. Twitter

From digitallondoner: "Brazil to win this one 3-0. I fully expect the Ivory Coast to put up a good fight though."

  10. SMS

From Craig, London: "Been looking forward to this one. I predict an open game compared to some we've seen and I have a few quid on Brazil to win 3-2 so come on the Selecao!"

  11. 606

From darkanddom: "One of Paraguay, USA, Uruguay, Mexico, and Chile will make the final. Mark my words. My money is on Chile."

  12. 18:04 Commentary

It's the tournament that turned form on its head isn't it? While England, Spain, Italy and France - to name a few - have limped tamely through the early stages of the tournament, the likes of Paraguay, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay are making the world sit up and take notice. After a creditable draw against Portugal first up, who's betting against the Elephants continuing that trend tonight?

  13. SMS

From Neil, Arborfield: "With every passing game I can't help but think that England's campaign is nothing to worry about. Spain, France, Italy, Germany and Portugal have all had stuttering starts. You'd like to think that if we could get out of the groups and improve we'd have an easier than expected route to the final."

  14. SMS

From Mark, Newark: "Do you think England could arrange an exchange with Ivory Coast and get Sven back? They are welcome to Postman Pat and his 2nd class formation."

  15. 18:11 Commentary

Brazil, however, are sure to provide tough opposition - even if their coach Dunga is very much a man under pressure. The South American press don't like the World Cup-winning midfielder's negativity, his diffidence with the media nor his insistence on employing actual tactics during Brazil matches. Imagine what their reaction would have been had they not beaten North Korea first up?

  16. Contributor BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson at Soccer City

"Just been besieged by flashlights in the stadium media centre but, alas, it wasn't for me - rather it was for the arrival of Arsene Wenger. I never realised how hard it is just to eat if you're famous. As for me, I'm in a queue hoping for a waiting list press seat. Wish me luck."

  17. SMS

From Alex in Manchester: "I'll bet against that trend! It's the South Americans who are setting the world cup alight, while the African teams as doing badly. This is the trend that's gonna continue."

  18. SMS

From Liam, Ashington: "This game will be one-sided in my opinion. Brazil will win for certain. Brazil would score goals for fun if Nilmar replaced Luis Fabiano!"

  19. 18:20 Commentary

Of course this match pits two men - Dunga and Sven-Goran Eriksson - against each other more than 20 years after they were player-and-coach at Fiorentina in 1988-89. "He's one of the best footballers I ever had," the Swede said in his pre-match press conference. "I'm not surprised Brazil are extremely well-organised." The Master v The Apprentice then?

  20. 18:22 Commentary BREAKING TEAM NEWS

Brazil are unchanged from the line-up that started against North Korea, while Ivory Coast bring Didier Drogba back into the side at the expense of Gervinho.

  21. Twitter

From suhaasYNWA: "Ivory coast to pull off an upset, 2-1 to the Elephants. All the goals to come in the second half."
You're not giving us the goalscorers? Lazy.

  22. 18:26 Commentary Brazil v Ivory Coast teams

    Brazil: 1-Julio Cesar; 2-Maicon, 3-Lucio, 4-Juan, 6-Michel Bastos, 5-Felipe Melo, 8-Gilberto Silva, 7-Elano, 10-Kaka, 11-Robinho, 9-Luis Fabiano.
    Ivory Coast: 1-Boubacar Barry; 21-Emmanuel Eboue, 4-Kolo Toure, 20-Guy Demel, 17-Siaka Tiene, 5-Didier Zokora, 19-Yaya Toure, 9-Cheik Tiote, 8-Salomon Kalou, 11-Didier Drogba, 15-Aruna Dindane.
    Referee: Stephane Lannoy (France)

  23. Twitter

From footy_fever: "Brazil would have been much more influential had Dunga taken Ronaldinho with him. As a Madrid fan, though, I wish Kaka the best of luck!"

  24. 18:31 Commentary

This is also a chance for revenge for Sven-Goran Eriksson, whose England side were knocked out by Brazil in the 2002 World Cup quarter-final. I wonder if the Swede has had Boubacar Barry practising holding on to long-range free-kicks?

  25. 18:39 Commentary

Seems to be enjoying himself in South Africa doesn't he Sven-Goran Eriksson? "It has been wonderful, I have enjoyed every day." What a contrast to his time in charge of the Three Lions. Fabio Capello is currently finding out just what it means to have to deal with England struggling in a major tournament - something Eriksson knows about all too well. BBC Sports Editor David Bond has learned the Football Association expects Don Fabio to resign if England are knocked out of the World Cup on Wednesday night, something that John Terry is rather keen to avoid. England are just timing their return to form perfectly, though... right?

  26. SMS

From Dan in Hong Kong: "Just as environmentalists have been saying for years, eagles, lions and elephants are all an endangered species in Africa."

  27. 606

From Vokey: "Soccer City at night really is a cracking looking stadium."

  28. 18:46 Commentary

Fans of Jonathan Stevenson will be delighted to hear that the little fella has only gone and bagged a press pass for this evening's game. Glory be. He'll be bringing you your match report - and plenty more from inside Soccer City besides I'd wager - so keep your eyes peeled for that folks.

  29. Twitter

From elliottsweeney: "Quite looking forward to this game - the best in the world against the best africa has to offer, so they say."

  30. Contributor Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson

"Dunga has done excellent work as coach of Brazil. They are a classy team, a technically able team, and also a team that can bite when it has to bite. It's the modern style of football. A draw against Brazil is always a good result, a fantastic result would be to beat them. But we are not going out thinking about a draw, we are going to try to win."

  31. Twitter

From MPH1982: "I think Robinho will once again be the key for Brazil tonight. He looked up for it coming out of the tunnel for the warm-up."

  32. 18:55 Commentary

Stat-attack time for you. Brazil have participated in all 18 previous World Cups, have won the most world titles (5), have won the most WC matches (65) and have scored the most WC goals (203). The Ivory Coast are competing in only their second World Cup, having failed to get through the group stages in 2006. The two teams have never previously met in international football, while Brazil have never lost a World Cup match against a team from a continent outside of Europe or South America. My brain really is that impressive.

  33. SMS

From Ryan, London: "So far, South American teams have played 8 games, winning 6 of them and drawing the other 2. Certainly the form continent of the tournament so far."

  34. SMS

Jack, Northallerton: "I really fancy Sven's lot to nick this tonight - and why not after the heroics of new zealand earlier. And I have them in my sweepstake of course!"

  35. Contributor Brazil coach Dunga

"Sven-Goran Eriksson is a very well-prepared coach. We know that whatever he is preparing for Brazil, it will make things difficult for us. His Ivory Coast team is always well set-up tactically and plays good football. They are very strong physically and defend very well, so we will have to find ways to overcome that."

  36. 606

From redandblackT: "This was supposed to be Kaka's Brazil team. With him off the boil a little (a lot to be honest) they'll have to rely on Robinho for creavity."

  37. SMS

Zack, Nottingham: "The critics of Luis Fabiano only have to look at his goalscoring record for Brazil - 25 goals in 40 games - and he is a great foil for Robinho."

  38. Twitter

From jamesagward: "This has the potential to be the best game so far - Drogba to score as the Elephants shock the favourites! Come on Cote D'Ivoire!"

  39. 19:10 Commentary

The players are out and about completing their warm-ups now at the Soccer City Stadium, and to a man they all look a relaxed and focused bunch. Looks can be deceiving, of course, but I'm still thinking this match has the potential to be a cracker. Plenty of empty seats around (again) but maybe it will fill up by kick-off.

  40. Contributor BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson at Soccer City

"Great ovation for all the Brazilian players as their names are read out over the tannoy but that is blown out of the water by the chorus of approval that greets the announcement that Didier Drogba starts for Ivory Coast. With the African sides struggling at the World Cup so far, tonight is of huge importance to the whole continent."

  41. SMS

From Anon: "I'm going for a 2-1 win to the Ivory Coast, with Robinho scoring for Brazil. Largely because I have a tenner on him to do so."

  42. Contributor BBC Sport's Clarence Seedorf

"Kaka has not had the best season with Real Madrid, of course, and he did not show his best in the first game against North Korea either. But he is working hard and I am sure he can settle into this tournament and come to life at any moment. Ivory Coast will have to keep a check on him because he is such a top player."

  43. 19:20 Commentary

Right, time for a Sammy Prediction? Why not. I'm going for a Brazil win 3-2. Get your hard-earned readies on that bad boy asap if you want to win BIG*.
*Doing this will more than likely result in you losing your hard-earned readies, so best you keep your cash in your pocket.

  44. Contributor BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson at Soccer City

"The atmosphere here at the Soccer City Stadium is relentlessly noisy - many people inside this stadium are anticipating the first classic of South Africa 2010."

  45. 19:24 Commentary

Here come the teams, and we're about to enjoy the anthems. I'm so excited.

  46. Twitter

From 337ee: "How to beat Brazil: Forget about Kaka, put a physical presence on Robinho and somehow peg Maicon back."

  47. 19:30 KICK-OFF Brazil v Ivory Coast

It's the Ivory Coast - in their green shirts and white shorts - who get us under way at a buzzing Soccer City Stadium.

  48. 1 min Commentary

Less than a minute on the clock and Robinho has already picked up where he left off against North Korea. He leads a Brazil charge at the Ivorian defence before unleashing a dipping effort from range that flies narrowly over Boubacar Barry's bar.

  49. 4 mins Commentary

Brazil already shifting the ball about nicely, though the Ivory Coast appear happy enough to let them play around in front of their defence. Sven's men yet to really get on the ball at all.

  50. 6 mins Commentary

There's a rare thing at this World Cup - a poor touch from Robinho. Before that Brazil had built well, but the Manchester City man's miscontrol ends the move on the edge of the Ivorian box.

  51. 8 mins Commentary

First spell of possession for the Ivory Coast - and it comes courtesy of two simple tackles on Kaka that sees the Brazilian playmaker dispossessed with ease twice in a minute. He really does look out of sorts, the Real Madrid star.

  52. 12 mins Commentary

This match has yet to spark into life just yet, and the Ivory Coast will be happy enough with that I'm sure. And Sven's men have a free-kick now 30 yards from goal to the right...

  53. 13 mins Commentary

... but Didier Drogba gets it all wrong, slapping a wild effort on goal miles wide. Shame.

  54. Twitter

From InfostradaLive: "If Brazil win they will qualify for the knockout phase, joining Netherlands as the second country to secure a spot in the Last 16."

  55. 16 mins Commentary

Another Ivory Coast free-kick and this time the delivery is much better, Emmanuel Eboue forcing Brazil keeper Julio Cesar into a brave punch under pressure to clear the Ivorian's cross.

  56. 19 mins Commentary

Corner to Brazil and Gilberto Silva thrashes a volley goalwards from Elano's delivery, only to see his effort well blocked and cleared. Might have been going wide anyway. Hhmm.

  57. Contributor BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson at Soccer City

"I seem to have ended up in a Brazilian stronghold and these Samba boys are not happy at all. Ivory Coast on top as Dunga's men keep giving it away cheaply - and Felipe Melo is bearing the brunt of the anger around here."

  58. 24 mins Commentary

They did it against Portugal in the first match, and Ivory Coast look like they're doing it again with a performance full of composure, strategy and discipline. Brazil finding it hard to spark in the face of two lines of four. And Sven's smiling on the bench - happy days for the Swede.

  59. 25 mins GOAL Brazil 1-0 Ivory Coast

Ah, sorry IC fans, I've absolutely nailed you there. Brazil break through the Ivorian defences for the first time as Kaka slips in Luis Fabiano inside the box for the frontman to smash into the roof of the net from eight yards. That's his first goal of 2010 and it was a beauty.

  60. 27 mins Commentary

Now then, how will the Ivory Coast respond? Not only have they fallen a goal behind, but two Brazilians desperate for a return to form - Kaka and Luis Fabiano - have only gone and chosen this match to do so in a move of real class.

  61. Contributor BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson at Soccer City

"Best move of the game by miles and it's just erupted all around me. Luis Fabiano had been struggling for goals and confidence but there aren't many more emphatic ways to end a drought than that."

  62. 31 mins YELLOW CARD

Siaka Tiene is the first man into referee Stephane Lannoy's book for a cynical ankle tap on Elano as the Brazilian playmaker looked to work some space on the wing.

  63. 34 mins Commentary

The wind has been taken out of the Ivory Coast's sails by that Luis Fabiano goal, and Didier Drogba is an island up front on his own. I'm not sure he's even seen the ball for a good few minutes - that will have to change if Sven's men want to get back into this.

  64. 606

From Cookie_Monster_Will_Eat_You: "Kaka looks past it to me. Or unfit."

  65. 39 mins Commentary

Two chances for Ivory Coast in quick succession, both to Aruna Dindane. The frontman should really do better with the first, a snap-shot from Emmanuel Eboue's cross that is blocked, but he troubles Julio Cesar a touch more with the second as the Brazil keeper does well to get behind a dipping effort from range. Encouraging for the Elephants.

  66. 41 mins Commentary

Again, better from the Ivory Coast. Emmanuel Eboue breaks and gets at the Brazil defence, drilling an effort that goes just wide from 20 yards. Looked like it should have been a corner for a deflection off Juan, too.

  67. SMS

From Nick, London: "Drogba looks a bit off the pace. So does Kalou. In fact, can we name a single Premier League player who has looked sharp so far?"

  68. 45 mins Commentary

Michel Bastos is picked out beautifully on the left with a glorious cross-field pass from Gilberto Silva, but Kaka's clipped cross from Bastos's lay-off is helped back to his keeper by Siaka Tiene.

  69. 20:17 HALF-TIME Brazil 1-0 Ivory Coast

That's the half-time whistle. It's not exactly flown by that 45 minutes, but Brazil have at least shown us a few flashes of Samba magic, not least with the goal. The IC not out of this just yet, though.

  70. Contributor BBC Radio 5 live's Chris Waddle

"Brazil are well organised, but apart from the finish from Fabiano there has been very little to shout about. Brazil will not change their style of play, so it will have to be the Ivory Coast that make changes."

  71. SMS

From Karl in Essex: "A Premier League player that looks sharp Nick (below)? Tim Howard the Everton and USA keeper."

  72. SMS

From John, Newcastle: "Re. Nick (below). Lucio has played 63 games this season including 18 world cup qualifiers. He looks as sharp as anyone. We can't blame the premier league for a lack of sharpness."

  73. Contributor BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson at Soccer City

"These Brazilians. They're still not happy you know. They lead 1-0 and have one foot in the last 16 but episodes of mis-control and carelessness with the ball are driving them crazy. I've rarely seen football fans so serious and miserable when winning at half-time."

  74. Contributor BBC World Service's Daniel Gallas at Soccer City

"African teams have huge local support, but Brazil can match that. Most in Soccer City are behind the Seleção."

  75. 20:32 Commentary

And Brazil get us up and under way in this second half at an increasingly chilly Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

  76. 48 mins Commentary

Gervinho is already getting warm on the touchlines, and I imagine it won't be too long before we see the Ivory Coast substitute striker if things stay as they are. Didier Drogba simply doesn't look fit to me.

  77. 50 mins GOAL Brazil 2-0 Ivory Coast

Well, it had been a sedate start to the half... until now. Luis Fabiano is reborn, flicking over one defender's challenge, clipping the ball over another and then slamming home left-footed into the corner. A hint of handball, maybe, off his final piece of control - but that was Samba magic and no mistake.

  78. 53 mins Commentary

Almost an immediate response from the Ivory Coast and it's their best opening of the match by a mile. Aruna Dindane works some space on the right and sends a great cross towards Didier Drogba, whose header back across goal drifts inches wide. Close.

  79. 54 mins SUBSTITUTION

It's Aruna Dindane's last involvement as he is brought off to be replaced by Ivory Coast striker Gervinho. Not the most ambitious of substitutions, a striker for a striker. But then this is Sven-Goran Eriksson we're talking about.

  80. Contributor BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson at Soccer City

"Perhaps unsurprisingly, no-one around me is talking about a possible handball, they are just shouting 'Luis Fab-iano'. Very, very loudly indeed. Dunga's asked the question, has Sven got any answers?"

  81. 58 mins Commentary

As Ivory Coast start to build up a head of steam, finally, our friends at Infostrada Sports tell us that the last Brazilian to score a World Cup hat-trick was a 17-year-old called Pele. He scored three goals against France in a 5-2 win on 24 June 1958. Something for Luis Fabiano to think about maybe?

  82. 60 mins Commentary

Moments after Didier Drogba is wrongly adjudged to be offside in a promising Ivory Coast attack, Gervinho is millimetres away from collecting a Salomon Kalou pass as he bursts inside the box.

  83. 61 mins Commentary

This is a bit more like it - end-to-end football. Elano tries his luck from range, but the Brazil midfielder's effort is a couple of yards wide.

  84. 62 mins Commentary

Oh, that's quality. Kaka and Robinho combine well and the former lashes goalwards, only to be denied by the Ivorian keeper high above his head. Lovely move.

  85. 63 mins GOAL Brazil 3-0 Ivory Coast

Game. Set. Match. It's brilliant from Kaka, the Galatico driving past a couple of defenders on the left and laying it back for Elano to complete the simple task of tapping in from close range.

  86. 65 mins Commentary

With Brazil more comfortable than a pair of Christmas slippers, suddenly they have something to worry about as Elano screams in agony after Cheik Tiote goes over the ball and crunches his studs into the Brazilian's shin. Ouch.

  87. 67 mins SUBSTITUTION

That's Elano's night's work done as he is stretchered off still in a lot of pain, Dani Alves brought on as his replacement. Let's hope the former Manchester City man is not too badly injured. The Ivory Coast respond with a substitution of their own with Kader Keita on for Salomon Kalou.

  88. Contributor BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson at Soccer City

"This has quickly turned into a damage limitation exercise for Ivory Coast and their Swedish manager, who must be sick of the sight of Brazil in World Cups right now. It's still early, but are we watching the champions-elect?"

  89. 70 mins Commentary

Yep, 3-0 up and Brazil have lit the touch-paper. Maicon, Kaka and Robinho are all enjoying themselves immensely and the way they are knocking the ball around, you would expect a fourth for the Samba Stars - and soon.

  90. 73 mins Commentary

Well, the Ivory Coast aren't going down without a fight and fair play to them. Romaric - who has just come on in place of Emmanuel Eboue - pings in a shot from 30 yards and Julio Cesar has to scramble to beat it away. Decent effort.

  91. 75 mins YELLOW CARD

Kader Keita gets a yellow card for an awful challenge on Felipe Melo, the Ivorian substitute going over the ball and catching the Brazilian midfielder's shin in much the same way as Cheik Tiote did on Elano a few minutes ago. Poor.

  92. 78 mins Commentary

Yet more quality interplay from Brazil, involving Robinho, Kaka and Dani Alves this time. It ends with Brazil earning a corner... but Alves's set-piece is cleared easily.

  93. 79 mins GOAL Brazil 3-1 Ivory Coast

From that Brazil corner, Ivory Coast break. Gervinho's lengthy run is halted by a fine Lucio tackle, but the ball falls to Yaya Toure and the Barcelona man's ball over the top of the defence is headed into the corner unmarked by Didier Drogba. A consolation? Or the start of a remarkable comeback?

  94. 81 mins Commentary

That's the first goal by an African side against Brazil in a World Cup - and the Ivorians look like they fancy getting another here...

  95. Contributor BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson at Soccer City

"Didier Drogba doesn't usually deal in consolation goals, but that's exactly what he just bagged for Ivory Coast there. This game was won ages ago, but typically Dunga, ever the perfectionist, was incensed by their sloppiness for a second match running."

  96. 85 mins YELLOW CARD

Hhmm - Kaka is the next man into the book for an unnecessary bit of push-and-shove with Yaya Toure.

  97. 86 mins YELLOW CARD

And Cheik Tiote joins him for a clumsy challenge on Luis Fabiano. It's all a bit scrappy now in these closing stages.

  98. 88 mins RED CARD

I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. Kader Keita collides with Kaka off the ball and goes down as if the Brazilian has assaulted him. It's nothing but a coming together, but referee Stephane Lannoy - who can't have seen the incident - gives Kaka a second yellow card and the Real Madrid man is off.

  99. 90 mins INJURY TIME

We'll have three minutes of added time, but that sending-off has cast a shadow over an otherwise entertaining second half here.

  100. 90 mins Commentary

A minute into added time and Ivory Coast almost have their second, Kader Keita pulling a crossfield pass back into the centre of the box but Brazil keeper Julio Cesar out well to punch clear with Didier Drogba looming.

  101. 90 mins SUBSTITUTION

It's Ramires on for Robinho as Dunga looks to take some more sting out of this finale.

  102. 21:20 FULL-TIME Brazil 3-1 Ivory Coast

That's it and Brazil are through to the last 16 with two wins from two matches so far.

  103. Contributor BBC Sport's Jonathan Stevenson at Soccer City

"What a shame that the game had to end in such farcical scenes. Dunga and the Brazilians around me are still apoplectic with rage about Kaka's sending off. I'm sure we haven't heard the last of that. A final thought - all those players rolling around and not once Didier Drogba? This World Cup really is unconventional…"

  104. 21:25 Commentary

A poor, poor game from referee Stephane Lannoy, then, to take the shine off an otherwise good match. The Frenchman missed a handball in the build-up to Luis Fabiano's second, failed to admonish Cheik Tiote for his foul on Elano that ended the Brazilian's night's work, and then dismissed Kaka for absolutely nothing right at the end. Shame.

  105. Twitter

From the Daily Telegraph's Henry Winter: "Disgraceful behaviour by Cote d'Ivoire's Keita. Kaka sent off. Ludicrous. Never touched him. Awful refereeing. Pure cheating. Feel for Kaka."

  106. SMS

Mohammed Alomair, Saudi Arabia: "What goes around comes around for Brazil, remember Rivaldo in 2002?"

  107. Twitter

From England defender Rio Ferdinand: "This World Cup is throwing up some crazy situations!! Is there something in the water out in SA?!"

  108. Commentary Ivory Coast coach Sven-Goran Eriksson

"We conceded a couple of easy goals, the first goal Brazil scored was very good. I thought we came back well but we couldn't score more than one. We were unlucky with the handballs (for Fabiano's second goal), the referee didn't see that, it shouldn't have been allowed."

  109. 21:35 Commentary

By the way, that sending-off means Kaka will definitely miss Brazil's final group game against Portugal - and that, ironically, is exactly what the Ivory Coast probably don't want given they need the Samba Stars to win that one in all likelihood. I wonder if Fifa will look now at Kader Keita's reaction at all.

  110. SMS

Brian in Dubai: "Look at the tape again. Kaka raises his arm to put his shoulder into the player. His reaction is not one of a person who is surprised someone has accidently run into him. He knows what he did."
Can't agree with that at all. Was never a booking.

  111. Twitter

From TheKiltman: "So, North Korea for a win tomorrow then?"

  112. 21:45 Commentary

Right, that's all from me folks. Top work from the Brazilians tonight - not such top work from referee Stephane Lannoy and Ivorian midfielder Kader Keita, though. Still, the Samba boys are in the last 16 - and the Ivory Coast could yet join them if results go their way. Tomorrow the other two teams of Group G - Portugal and North Korea - face off, before Chile-Switzerland and Spain-Honduras later in the day. Pranav Soneji will kick you off tomorrow morning, so make sure you're front and centre for that one. See ya.

Brazil progressed to the knockout stages of the World Cup with an efficient rather than effervescent performance against a subdued Ivory Coast.

The scoreline may suggest otherwise but the South Americans lacked the vintage Brazilian sparkle - although they produced moments of brilliance during an incident-packed second-half.

Luis Fabiano scored twice - a fine first-half strike, then a second goal with a dubious hint of handball - and Elano slotted in ahead of Didier Drogba's headed consolation.

But it was a mixed evening for Brazil's playmaker Kaka, who was harshly sent off late in the game after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession.

Kaka saw yellow in the 85th minute for pushing Yaya Toure and a minute later was sent from the field when Abdelkader Keita collapsed holding his face after an innocuous collision between the players which did not warrant a booking.

Prior to that, Kaka - who in the build-up had been the focus of much speculation regarding his lack of form - showed glimpses of the player who was named World Footballer of the Year back in 2007.

He put Luis Fabiano through for the striker's beautifully-taken opening goal and played a role in Elano's second-half strike which sealed Brazil's victory.

Drogba, a mere 16 days after breaking his elbow, started for the Ivory Coast to spearhead an attacking 4-3-3 formation, but the Africans added little oomph to the proceedings.

The Elephants manager Sven-Goran Eriksson had predicted his team would "create a surprise", yet there was little hope of that as they defended deep and allowed Brazil to play at their own pace.

There had been signs over the last few days that the World Cup had moved up a gear, but this game started with the tentativeness which had marred previous matches.

Luis Fabiano's goal thankfully lit up the first half. The Sevilla striker's back-heel to Kaka sparked a nice one-two which finished with a venomous shot into the roof of the net from an acute angle.

Ivory Coast changed their formation after the break with Drogba playing on his own in front of a five-man midfield, but they soon had a mountain to climb as Luis Fabiano struck again.

The striker flicked the ball over one defender, jinked beyond another to clinically finish with a left-footed shot from close range. There was suspicion of handball in his final movement but there were little complaints from Ivory Coast.

Brazil upped the tempo on the hour and Kaka should have finished the best move of the match with a goal but instead he shot straight at Boubacar Copa.

He made amends moments later as he shimmied past a couple of defenders and passed across goal for Elano to side-foot home for his second goal of the tournament.

Ten minutes before the end, Yaya Toure's ball over the top found Drogba who headed home into the corner for a goal which could prove to be significant to Ivory Coast's hopes of qualifying.
